IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps illustrate the layout of a university's sports centre now, and how it will look after changes.

From an overview, it is evident that before construction there was only seven factors available, when new changes will implemented, it will be converted into thirteen categories. Sports shop, cafe, sports hall and dance room will be introduced in the upcoming years.

It is clearly seen that there are two outdoor courts in the east and western side, while reception and gym is developed opposite the pool. In the west-north corner, changing room is observed, while seating is available in eastern side.

Moving towards rest of the information, when the university's sport centre will be reconstructed, the outdoor courts will be removed and leisure pool and sports hall will be developed. The area around pool remained unchanged, where gym, changing room, seating and reception was already established. In the south direction, sports shop, cafe and changing rooms will be installed, whereas dance studio will be takes place in the east.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the maps, including the key additions and removals. You successfully identified the transition from outdoor courts to a leisure pool and sports hall. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate; describing the changes as increasing from 'seven factors' to 'thirteen categories' is vague and not clearly supported by the visual data. To improve, focus on describing the spatial changes more precisely. While you mention the addition of the sports shop, cafe, and dance studio, the description of the layout could be more systematic to ensure all key changes are highlighted clearly for the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, moving from an overview to specific details of the current and future layouts. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moving towards' and 'while', which help the flow. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'rest of the information' or 'seven factors'. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and that the logical progression between the 'before' and 'after' states is more seamless. The use of cohesive devices should feel more natural rather than forced.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reconstructed', 'developed', and 'installed'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'dance studio will be takes place' (should be 'will be located') and 'seven factors available' (which is imprecise). To improve, try to use more precise terminology for describing spatial layouts, such as 'situated', 'adjacent to', or 'transformed into'. Expanding your range of descriptive verbs and nouns related to urban planning will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'when new changes will implemented' (should be 'are implemented') and 'gym, changing room, seating and reception was already established' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and tense consistency. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent use of future tense when describing the redevelopment plans.
