IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided diagrams compare the present layout of a university's sports centre with it's future plans after it's renovation.

Overall, the sports centre will undergo significant changes with addition to modern facilities and amenities. The major changes include two dance studios, a leisure pool, a cafe, a sports shop, multiple changing rooms and a sports hall.

The present sports centre looks very simple with two outdoor courts, one on the west and another on the east side of the center hall. The entrance is at the southern part which leads to a reception counter. Just above that, a 25 meter pool is situated which is surrounded by a gym on the north side, a seating arrangement on the east and a changing room to the west side.

However, the future plan is more sophisticated. The total area of the centre is planned to expend more by incorporating the outdoor court areas. At the north-east part, two dance studios are going to be built. Below that, a changing room is planned along with a cafe on the left. The original feature of the centre will remain unchanged, while a sports hall will be developed beside the seating arrangement to the east. At the west, a large leisure pool will be constructed. Moreover, to the bottom left of the entrance, a sports shop is noticed with a changing room at the south-west corner.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the sports centre's current and future layout. You provided a clear overview and highlighted the key changes, such as the addition of the leisure pool and dance studios. However, the response could be improved by providing more precise comparisons. For instance, instead of saying the area is 'planned to expend', you should explicitly state that the outdoor courts are being removed to make space for the new facilities. While you covered the main points, a more analytical approach to the spatial changes would elevate the response to a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, moving from an introduction to a description of the current layout, and finally the future plan. You use some cohesive devices like 'However' and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, the progression within the final paragraph is slightly mechanical. To improve, ensure that the transition between describing the current state and the future state is smoother, perhaps by using more varied linking phrases to contrast the two layouts more effectively throughout the body paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the layout, using terms like 'sophisticated', 'incorporating', and 'amenities'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'expend' instead of 'expand' and 'to the bottom left' which is slightly informal for an academic report. To reach a higher band, try to use more precise collocations related to architectural changes, such as 'demolished', 'converted', or 'relocated', rather than relying on general verbs like 'built' or 'developed'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with apostrophes: 'it's' is used incorrectly for the possessive 'its' in the first paragraph. Additionally, there are minor phrasing issues, such as 'with addition to' which should be 'with the addition of'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic punctuation and prepositional accuracy to improve your control.
