IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The diagram illustrates the current layout of a university's sports centre and how it will look after redevelopment.

Overall, the sports centre will undergo considerable changes, with the addition of several facilities such as dance studios, a sports hall, a leisure pool, a cafe, a sports shop and an additional changing room, whereas the central area will remain unchanged.

Looking at the western section, the outdoor courts will be completely replaced by an indoor leisure pool, directly connected to the main building. To the southwest of this new leisure pool, an additional changing room and a sports shop will be built adjacent to the entrance area. Despite these surrounding developments, the existing changing room, the central 25-meter pool, and the northern gym will remain in their original positions and dimensions.

Looking at the eastern side of the center, the outdoor courts will also be removed to make room for new indoor facilities. A large sports hall will be built next to the pool seating area. Further east, two dance studios will be added along the edge of the building. In addition, the entrance area will be upgraded to include a new café to the right of the reception desk and another changing room in the southeast corner.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all requirements of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the major changes and successfully highlighted the key features of the redevelopment. The comparison between the 'now' and 'after' layouts is well-structured, and you have accurately identified which areas remain unchanged (the central pool and northern gym) and which are being replaced. The information is logically selected and reported, ensuring the reader gets a comprehensive understanding of the transformation. The response is well-balanced, covering both the western and eastern sections of the sports centre with sufficient detail to meet the requirements of an Academic Task 1 report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that focus on specific sections of the sports centre. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'looking at', 'despite', and 'in addition' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the western and eastern developments, which helps the reader follow the spatial changes easily. The use of referencing is clear, and the overall structure is coherent throughout the entire report.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have demonstrated a good range of vocabulary appropriate for describing maps and plans. Phrases like 'undergo considerable changes', 'adjacent to', 'remain in their original positions', and 'make room for' are used accurately and naturally. The vocabulary is precise and contributes to the clarity of the report. While the range is sufficient and effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms for 'added' or 'built' (such as 'constructed', 'incorporated', or 'introduced') could further enhance the lexical variety. Overall, the language is well-chosen and error-free.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response displays a high level of grammatical control. You have used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively, such as the use of participial phrases ('directly connected to the main building') and concessive clauses ('Despite these surrounding developments...'). Punctuation is accurate, and there are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the tense usage is consistent and appropriate for describing future changes to a layout. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a strong command of English grammar.
