Student answer (Band 4.5)

It is often argued that despite the advances made in agriculture, a lot of people suffer from hunger worldwide because of the global economic crisis. Measures such as employment opportunity creation and funding to NGOs should be taken to reduce the problem.

One of the major reasons of why some people around the world still go hungry even though the agriculture sector is producing huge amount of food everyday is the global economic crisis. Many countries are dealing with the adverse effect of it which got worse post Covid-19. As a result, many people cannot afford to purchase basic food items as the price is too high compared to their income level. For example, the price of rice has significantly increased over the last 5 years, causing problem to many low income people who heavily rely on rice as their staple food. Moreover, some countries cannot afford to import many agricultural products because of the high import duties and tariffs. Hence, advancement in agriculture did not improve people's financial state and is still causing hunger problem around the globe.

In order to eradicate this problem, governments should come forward and take initiatives by funding NGOs like World Health Organization (WHO), UNESCO and so on so that they can make invest in campaigns to help such countries suffering from hunger problems. Additionally, employment opportunities should be created to help people earn so that they can afford basic food requirements. For instance, state can provide incentives and loans to encourage startups which can create employment options.

In conclusion, the present global economic crisis and import tariffs have made some people around the world still go hungry even after advancing the agriculture sector. Governments can take measures to help reduce the problem by giving funds to major NGOs and create job opportunities to improve people's financial situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 1.0

The response is completely off-topic. The task required a report on a visual diagram showing the redevelopment of a university sports centre. Instead, the student wrote an essay about global hunger and economic crises. Because the student failed to address the prompt entirely, the response cannot be assessed for task achievement in the context of an Academic Task 1 report. It does not describe the layout, identify main features, or make comparisons as requested. Consequently, this receives the lowest possible score for failing to respond to the specific task instructions provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

Despite being off-topic, the text itself is structured like a standard essay with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The logical progression is clear, and cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Hence', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is logical and consistent. If the content had matched the prompt, this would be a strong performance in terms of structure; however, because the content is entirely irrelevant to the visual data provided, the coherence is undermined by the lack of connection to the actual task requirements.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally appropriate for an argumentative essay. The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss complex social issues, using terms like 'eradicate', 'initiatives', 'incentives', and 'staple food'. There is an attempt to use topic-specific language related to economics and development. While the vocabulary is not relevant to the sports centre diagram, the lexical control is decent, showing an ability to express ideas clearly and with some precision. The errors are minimal, and the range is adequate for the level of discussion attempted.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is evidence of good control over grammar, with complex sentences such as 'One of the major reasons of why some people around the world still go hungry even though the agriculture sector is producing huge amount of food everyday is the global economic crisis.' While there are minor errors, such as 'causing problem to many low income people' (should be 'causing problems for') and 'make invest' (should be 'make investments'), the meaning is never obscured. The grammar is functional and demonstrates a reasonable level of proficiency.
