IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided diagrams compare the present layout of a university's sports centre with it's future plans after it's renovation.

Overall, the sports centre will undergo significant changes with addition to modern facilities and amenities. The major changes include two dance studios, a leisure pool, a cafe, a sports shop, multiple changing rooms and a sports hall.

The present sports centre looks very simple with two outdoor courts, one on the west and another on the east side of the center hall. The entrance is at the southern part which leads to a reception counter. Just above that, a 25 meter pool is situated which is surrounded by a gym on the north side, a seating arrangement on the east and a changing room to the west side.

However, the future plan is more sophisticated. The total area of the centre is planned to expend more by incorporating the outdoor court areas. At the north-east part, two dance studios are going to be built. Below that, a changing room is planned along with a cafe on the left. The original feature of the centre will remain unchanged, while a sports hall will be developed beside the seating arrangement to the east. At the west, a large leisure pool will be constructed. Moreover, to the bottom left of the entrance, a sports shop is noticed with a changing room at the south-west corner.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the sports centre's current layout and the proposed redevelopment. You have provided a clear overview and highlighted key changes, such as the addition of the leisure pool and dance studios. However, the description of the future layout is slightly confusing in places; for example, stating that the 'total area of the centre is planned to expend' (should be 'expand') and describing the location of the new sports hall relative to the seating arrangement could be more precise. To reach a higher band, ensure that spatial relationships are described with absolute clarity, as this is crucial for map-based tasks.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs describing the 'before' and 'after' states. The use of cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'at the north-east part' helps guide the reader through the spatial changes. Paragraphing is used appropriately. To improve, ensure that the transition between the description of the current state and the future state is smoother. Some of the referencing, such as 'the original feature of the centre', is slightly vague, as it is not immediately clear which specific features are being referred to as 'original'.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the layout, including terms like 'redevelopment', 'sophisticated', and 'incorporating'. There are some minor errors in word choice and form, such as 'expend' instead of 'expand' and 'it's' (possessive) instead of 'its'. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the more precise, sophisticated collocations that would elevate the response to a higher band. Focus on using more varied verbs to describe spatial changes, such as 'relocated', 'transformed', or 'converted', rather than relying on 'built' or 'developed'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with apostrophes ('it's' used for possessive 'its' twice in the first paragraph) and some awkward phrasing, such as 'with addition to modern facilities'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. You should pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. The sentence structure is generally clear, but more variety in complex sentence forms would demonstrate better control.
