IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided diagrams compare the present layout of a university's sports centre with it's future plans after it's renovation.

Overall, the sports centre will undergo significant changes with addition to modern facilities and amenities. The major changes include two dance studios, a leisure pool, a cafe, a sports shop, multiple changing rooms and a sports hall.

The present sports centre looks very simple with two outdoor courts, one on the west and another on the east side of the center hall. The entrance is at the southern part which leads to a reception counter. Just above that, a 25 meter pool is situated which is surrounded by a gym on the north side, a seating arrangement on the east and a changing room to the west side.

However, the future plan is more sophisticated. The total area of the centre is planned to expend more by incorporating the outdoor court areas. At the north-east part, two dance studios are going to be built. Below that, a changing room is planned along with a cafe on the left. The original feature of the centre will remain unchanged, while a sports hall will be developed beside the seating arrangement to the east. At the west, a large leisure pool will be constructed. Moreover, to the bottom left of the entrance, a sports shop is noticed with a changing room at the south-west corner.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the sports centre's current and future layout. You provided a clear overview and highlighted the key changes, such as the addition of the leisure pool and dance studios. However, the response could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the two plans. For example, instead of just listing features, you could explicitly state that the outdoor courts are being replaced by new indoor facilities. The description of the locations is generally accurate, though some spatial relationships could be more precise to help the reader visualize the changes more effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that separate the current state from the future plans. You use some cohesive devices like 'However' and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the transition between describing the current layout and the future layout is smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, which helps the reader follow the progression of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the layout, using terms like 'redevelopment,' 'sophisticated,' and 'incorporating.' There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'expend' instead of 'expand,' and 'it's' (a contraction) instead of 'its' (possessive). While these do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure you are using the correct form of possessive pronouns and verbs.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with apostrophes, such as 'it's renovation' and 'it's future plans,' which should be 'its.' Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and prepositions, such as 'at the southern part' instead of 'in the southern part.' While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause confusion for the reader. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of possessive pronouns.
