IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pictured sketch displays the structure of the university's sports centre before and after renovation which will be concluded in the near future.
Overall, the region is expanded by replacing the two outdoor courts with different areas for innovative operations and retail centres.
At present, as we the access main access point we find a reception. The sports centre has a 25 metre long pool at the core enclosed by a Gym to the north, seating and changing rooms by the right and left respectively. Outside this zone, there exist two outdoor courts on either side.
On the other hand, the future version consists of a massive extended hall with various modifications. The Gym is expanded into a longer area and a sports hall just beneath it. To the right of the gateway there is a cafe established and a sports outlet facing it. There are two changing rooms on the both corners of the venue at the bottom. The outdoor courts are substituted by a leisure pool on the west and dance studios on the east.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main features of the sports centre's layout before and after the redevelopment. You have clearly highlighted the key changes, such as the replacement of the outdoor courts with a leisure pool and dance studios, and the addition of retail facilities. The overview is concise and provides a good summary of the transformation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial descriptions are precise; for instance, describing the gym as being 'just beneath' the original gym is slightly ambiguous. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well and provided a clear comparison between the two timeframes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the 'before' and 'after' states. The progression of information is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On the other hand' and 'At present'. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother in some areas. For example, the sentence 'The Gym is expanded into a longer area and a sports hall just beneath it' lacks a clear cohesive link to the previous sentence. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'innovative operations', and 'substituted'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'the access main access point' (a repetition error) and 'at the bottom' (which is slightly vague for a floor plan). While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, some collocations could be more natural. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology for describing spatial layouts, such as 'adjacent to', 'situated in the corner', or 'occupying the central area'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'as we the access main access point' and 'on the both corners'. Additionally, 'which will be concluded in the near future' is slightly awkward; 'which is scheduled for completion' would be more natural. Despite these errors, your meaning is consistently clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To aim for a higher band, focus on proofreading for small errors in articles and prepositions, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures.
