IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The maps below illustrate the layout of a university's sports center at present and how it will appear after renovation.

Overall, the future plan contains considerable changes to the sports center. The pool and the area around it will remain unchanged, with minor changes. Outdoor courts will be transformed into several rooms, and the studios will be built for dancing. The size of the pool will remain stable, and an extra pool will be placed as a leisure pool.

In the center, there is a 25m pool that will remain unchanged in the future. The gym in the north will extend, and the changing room will not be altered; instead, new changing rooms will be constructed. In addition, the seating area and the reception will not be changed. West outdoor courts will be transformed into a leisure pool, and the east outdoor pools will be modified into a sports hall and two dancing studios at the east end. In the south, changing rooms will be made on both ends, and a cafe adjacent to the right changing room and a sports shop by the side of the west changing room.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the redevelopment plan. You have successfully identified the main changes, such as the transformation of outdoor courts into a leisure pool and a sports hall, and the expansion of the gym. The overview provides a clear summary of the general trend of the redevelopment. However, the description of the pool area is slightly contradictory; you state the pool remains unchanged but then mention an 'extra pool' and a 'leisure pool' being added. A more precise distinction between the existing 25m pool and the new additions would improve clarity. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph detailing the specific changes. The progression of information is easy to follow, moving from the general layout to specific zones (north, west, east, and south). You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'instead', and 'on both ends' to link ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. To reach a higher band, ensure that referencing is always precise, as the transition between describing the existing pool and the new leisure pool could be smoother to avoid confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'transformed', 'modified', and 'adjacent'. The language is generally precise and appropriate for an academic report. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To improve further, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or synonyms to avoid repeating words like 'changed' or 'unchanged' multiple times. For example, using 'remain unaltered' or 'undergo significant modification' would add variety and demonstrate a more flexible command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The pool and the area around it will remain unchanged, with minor changes' and 'West outdoor courts will be transformed into a leisure pool, and the east outdoor pools will be modified into a sports hall'. The grammar is generally accurate, and punctuation is handled well. While the sentence structures are functional and clear, there is limited use of more advanced complex structures (e.g., passive voice variations or relative clauses) that would push the score higher. Most sentences are error-free, which is a strong point.
