IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The plan illustrates the representation of university's sports centre before and after the redeveolpment.

Overall, There are significant changes in the layout of this sports facility. Lot of sections are newly introduce while outdoor courts completely demolished. The main pool, gym, changing room and reception will remain, although the internal layout will be considerably modified.

At present, the sports centre consists of a 25-metre pool in the centre, with a gym directly above it, a changing room on the western side and seating to the east. The reception is situated immediately below the pool. There are also outdoor courts on both the eastern and western sides of the building.

Under the proposed plan, the centre will be extended mainly to the east, west and south. The western outdoor courts will be replaced by a large leisure pool, while a changing room and sports shop will be constructed in the south-western section. The existing 25-metre pool will remain in its current position, as will the gym, although the seating area will be reduced.

Several new facilities will also be introduced. A sports hall will be built to the east of the main pool, with two dance studios further east. In the south-eastern part, another changing room and a café will be added. The eastern outdoor courts will therefore disappear, making way for these new indoor facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively covers all requirements of the task. You have successfully identified the main features of the sports centre before and after the redevelopment, such as the expansion of the building and the replacement of outdoor courts with new indoor facilities. The overview is clear, and the comparison between the two layouts is well-integrated. You have highlighted key changes, such as the addition of the leisure pool, sports hall, and café, while noting which elements remain unchanged. The information is accurate and logically presented, providing a comprehensive summary of the visual data provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the introduction, the current state, and the proposed changes. Cohesive devices such as 'At present', 'Under the proposed plan', and 'further east' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the spatial layout. The flow between sentences is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. The structure is coherent, and the information is presented in a way that is easy to follow and understand.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the layout and changes, such as 'redevelopment', 'demolished', 'modified', and 'constructed'. The vocabulary is precise and appropriate for an academic report. While there are minor errors, such as 'newly introduce' (should be 'newly introduced') and 'redeveolpment' (spelling error), these do not impede communication. The use of directional language (e.g., 'south-western section', 'eastern side') is accurate and adds to the clarity of the description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used passive voice effectively to describe the changes, such as 'will be replaced' and 'will be constructed'. While there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'Lot of sections are newly introduce' (should be 'A lot of sections are newly introduced') and 'outdoor courts completely demolished' (missing auxiliary verb), the majority of your sentences are error-free. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the errors present do not cause any difficulty for the reader.
