IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two diagrams illustrate the layout of a university's sports centre's current layout and how it will look after redevelopment.
Overall, we can see that the core structure of the centre remains almost the same even after the redevelopment. The total area has increased significantly, in addition to that, the outdoor structure changed greatly.
In the previous layout, we can see a vast amount of space is assigned to the outdoor courts which are present on either side of the centre. No change appears in the core structure. There is a 25m indoor pool right at the heart of the layout. We notice gym towards the north, seating located to the east, changing room to the west and reception to the south this remained the same.
In the redeveloped structure, outdoor courts were replaced by various indoor sports. To the west a leisure pool was added, to the east a sports hall was an addition, gym to north was expanded and dance studios were adjacent to the sports hall. Two more changing rooms and a sports shop and a cafe was to be built near the reception.
In conclusion, indoor activities were given more space.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully identifies the main features of the sports centre redevelopment. You have clearly contrasted the 'before' and 'after' states, noting the shift from outdoor courts to indoor facilities. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant changes, such as the expansion of the gym and the addition of new amenities. However, the description of the 'current' layout is slightly repetitive, and some specific details, such as the exact location of the new leisure pool or the sports hall, could be more precisely integrated into the comparison to fully meet the requirements for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the current layout from the proposed changes. Cohesive devices such as 'In the previous layout', 'In the redeveloped structure', and 'In conclusion' help guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. For instance, the list of facilities in the second paragraph feels slightly disjointed. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'core structure', 'adjacent', and 'amenities'. The vocabulary is generally accurate and conveys the intended meaning clearly. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items related to architectural descriptions. For example, instead of saying 'outdoor structure changed greatly', you could use 'the external layout underwent a significant transformation'. There are no major spelling errors, and the vocabulary used is appropriate for an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the grammar is generally clear, there are some minor errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'a cafe was to be built' (should be 'were to be built' to match the plural list) and 'gym to north' (missing 'the'). Additionally, some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'In the previous layout, we can see a vast amount of space is assigned'. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the punctuation is generally correct. Increasing the use of more sophisticated complex structures would improve the score.
