Student answer (Band 7.0)
The plans illustrates the current layout of a university sports centre and the proposed changes that will be made after its redevelopment.
Overall, the spots centre will become considerably larger, the two outdoor courts being replaced by a range of new facilities. However, the pool, gym, seating area and the reception will remain in their existing locations.
At present, the sports centre consists of a central building with outdoor courts on Eastern and Western sides of the building. The central building consists of a 25m pool in the middle seating area on the eastern side and changing room on the western side. The gym is located on the northern end of the building while the reception is situated on the southern entrance.
Following the redevelopment plan the western outdoor court would be replaced by a Leisure pool with a changing room and a sports shop to its south. The eastern outdoor court would be changed into a Sports hall with 2 Dance studios to its further east. Another changing room and cafe would be constructed on the south-eastern boundary. While the 25m pool, seating area, the pre-existing changing room and the reception would remain unchanged.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively addresses the task by summarizing the main features of the sports centre redevelopment. You have successfully identified the key changes, such as the replacement of outdoor courts with new facilities like the leisure pool and sports hall, while noting the features that remain unchanged. The overview provides a clear summary of the transformation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial references are precise; for instance, the description of the 'central building' layout could be more clearly linked to the visual data to avoid ambiguity. Overall, the response is well-focused and covers all significant aspects of the provided plans.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the current and future states. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you use cohesive devices such as 'At present,' 'Following the redevelopment plan,' and 'While' to link information effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the current layout from the proposed changes. The flow is generally natural, though some minor improvements in the variety of linking phrases could further enhance the cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redevelopment,' 'proposed changes,' and 'existing locations.' The vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for a report on a diagram. There are a few minor slips, such as 'spots centre' (a typo for 'sports centre') and 'on Eastern and Western sides' (which requires an article). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to architectural changes, such as 'demolished,' 'converted into,' or 'extended,' to demonstrate a more sophisticated lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most sentences are clear and error-free. However, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'The plans illustrates' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'on the southern entrance' (preposition choice). Additionally, there is a missing article in 'seating area on the eastern side.' Despite these occasional errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the meaning is never obscured. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help you achieve a higher score.
