IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided two maps depict the current layout of a university's sports center, and other one for its future projection.
Overall, it can be seen that the sport center of university will undergo some significant changes, as expected it will be modernized by adding some new features for leisure activities.
Looking at the current layout, the central area is occupied by a 25 meter pool, which is surrounded by four new features, such as a seating area in the nearer east side, and reception in the southern part, a gym club in the northern side, also a changing room in the nearer western area. Currently, two outdoor courts are designed by either side of the central area, one is in the eastern side, and other is in the western part.
By looking at its future development, the pool will be at its same position, while the size of Gym center will be extended, and a sports hall will be established adjacent to the seating area, also a leisure pool will be constructed in the northern side adjacent to the changing room. Outdoor courts will be converted into two dance studios in the eastern side, and another two changing rooms will be built. One in the south-eastern part along with a cafe, and other will in the south-western part along with a sports shop.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main features of the sports center and provides a clear comparison between the current and future layouts. You have highlighted the key changes, such as the expansion of the gym and the addition of new facilities like the leisure pool and dance studios. The overview is clear and sets the tone for the report. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial descriptions are precise; for example, the current layout description mentions 'four new features' surrounding the pool, but the map shows specific rooms, and your description of the future layout could be more systematically organized to avoid slight confusion regarding the exact placement of the new changing rooms and cafe.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized, moving from an introduction and overview to a detailed description of the current state and then the future changes. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these distinct sections. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Looking at the current layout' and 'By looking at its future development,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the use of 'also' to start clauses is slightly repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow and coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment,' 'projection,' 'adjacent,' and 'converted.' These are appropriate for an Academic Task 1 report. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'gym club' (usually just 'gym' or 'fitness center') and 'nearer east side' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). To improve, try to use more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly, but it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for the higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'other one for its future projection' (missing a verb or preposition) and 'other will in the south-western part' (missing the verb 'be'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences and minor errors in article usage. To achieve a higher score, focus on ensuring that all sentences have a clear subject and verb, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures with greater accuracy.
