IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The plan shows the current layout of a university's sports centre and the proposed changes that will be made following its redevelopment.
Overall, the area is expected to undergo significant redevelopment with several new facilities being introduced. The most notable changes will be the expansion of the sports centre over the outdoor courts while some existing features will be changed.
At present, the majority of the area is predominantly occupied by outdoor courts on the east and west sides. There is an entrance at the base which leads to a 25m pool with seating, gym and a changing room on its east, north and west side respectively.
Following the redevelopment, the outdoor court on the left of the pool will be replaced by a leisure pool along with its own changing room. Furthermore, a cafe and sports shop will be constructed near the reception area while the existing gym will be expanded towards the east side. The outdoor court on the east side will also be converted into a sports hall with a dance studio to its right and a changing room adjacent to the cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively addresses the task by summarizing the main features of the sports centre's redevelopment. You have successfully identified the key changes, such as the conversion of outdoor courts into a leisure pool and a sports hall, and the addition of new facilities like the cafe and sports shop. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the transformation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial relationships are described with maximum precision; for instance, clarifying the exact location of the new dance studio relative to the existing structures would further enhance the clarity of the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that transition smoothly from the current state to the future layout. The use of cohesive devices such as 'At present', 'Following the redevelopment', and 'Furthermore' helps guide the reader through the information effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the current layout from the proposed changes. The progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, including terms like 'redevelopment', 'predominantly occupied', 'constructed', and 'converted'. The language is precise and appropriate for an academic report. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation. To move toward a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated descriptive language, such as 'undergo a complete transformation' or 'the footprint of the facility will be extended', to demonstrate a more flexible and academic command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The writing displays a good command of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'The plan shows the current layout... and the proposed changes that will be made'. The use of passive voice is appropriate for a report on architectural plans (e.g., 'will be replaced', 'will be constructed'). The sentences are generally error-free, and the punctuation is accurate. The control over complex structures is consistent, contributing to the overall clarity and professional tone of the response.
