The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The map illustrates the current layout of a university's sports center and how it will look after redevelopment.
Overall, it will be modernized with several new amenities, such as sports shops, a cafe, a sports hall, and a dance studio.
At present, it consists of a 25 m pool in the center of a tertiary education, and along with each side, there is a changing room on the left side, seating on the right, gym on the upward side of the pool, and a reception on the downward side. Moreover, on the eastern and western sides, there are outdoor courts located now.
However, in the future, the sports center will be expanded by covering everything inside it. The pool, the changing room, and the seating area will remain unchanged, but the gym will be further expanded, located on the northern side. Furthermore, the outdoor courts will be demolished, and leisure pool will be built on the western corner and on the eastern corner two dance studios will be designed. In addition, two more changing rooms will be installed in the south end corner of the university, and next to it, there will be the sports shop, and reception will remain the same, and in the other corner, there will be the cafe and the changing room. Finally, adjacent to the seating area, a new sports hall will be constructed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all key features of the plans, including the expansion of the gym, the addition of the leisure pool and dance studios, and the construction of the sports hall. You have successfully identified the main trends, such as the demolition of outdoor courts and the modernization of the facility. However, the description of locations is occasionally imprecise, such as 'upward side' and 'downward side' instead of 'north' and 'south'. While the overview is clear, the report would benefit from a more concise grouping of information to avoid a slightly cluttered description of the new layout. Overall, you have addressed the requirements of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the current and future states. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'at present', 'moreover', 'however', and 'in addition' to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two timeframes. While the flow is generally good, some transitions between the specific locations in the final paragraph feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. Improving the variety of referencing would help the text read more naturally, but the progression of information remains clear throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'amenities', 'demolished', and 'constructed'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'upward side' and 'downward side', which are not standard terminology for describing maps or plans. Additionally, 'tertiary education' is used incorrectly in the context of describing the location of the pool. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise spatial vocabulary and ensuring that collocations are natural. Despite these minor issues, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'in the center of a tertiary education' and 'in the south end corner of the university', which slightly affect the precision of your writing. Punctuation is generally handled well, though some sentences are quite long and could be broken up for better readability. While there are errors present, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear. To improve, focus on using more varied complex structures and ensuring prepositions are used correctly when describing locations.
