Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagrammatic representation illustrates the current layout of a sports center of a university and its appearance after redesigning. From the first glimpse of the pictures, it can be clearly seen that a lot of changes will take place in the sports center in the upcoming years.
At present, there are few facilities available in the given sketch of a university. There is a reception in the south side of the sports center. There is a pool in the middle of the sports center which is about 25m long. There are two outdoor courts on west and east side of the sports center in a university. Changing room is available on the west side of the pool along with the seating arrangement on its east side. Gym is also available on the north side which includes equipment and individuals can use it for exercising.
In future, a lot of new facilities will be introduced in the given sketch of a university. The outdoor courts on the west side will be replaced by a leisure pool along with a changing room and sports shop in its southwest direction. On the other hand, the outdoor courts on the east side will be replaced with two dance studios, one in northeast and another in east direction of the given sketch. One more changing room will be available along with a cafe in the southeast direction of the sports center. A sports hall will be opened in the middle adjoining the place occupied for seating.
Overall, in the future, sports center in a university will undergo numerous innovations and will make it more attractive with various new facilities for the members as well as the visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the university sports centre's present layout and its future redevelopment plans. An overview is provided in the introductory and concluding paragraphs, noting that major changes will take place to expand facilities. Key comparisons and locations are properly identified, such as the outdoor courts being replaced by a leisure pool and dance studios, while the 25m pool and reception remain unchanged. The data is accurately derived from the visual prompt without significant omissions or inventions. However, the development of ideas leans towards a simple listing format rather than a fully synthesized comparison, which places this response comfortably at Band 6.5 to 7.0. Given the clear coverage and accurate reporting, a band score of 6.5 is well-earned.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into four logical paragraphs: an introduction, description of the present layout, description of the future plan, and a concluding overview. Progression is clear and easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'At present', 'In future', 'On the other hand', and 'Overall' are used appropriately to structure the essay. However, some cohesive ties feel a bit repetitive and mechanical (e.g., frequently starting sentences with 'There is' or 'There are'), and referencing can occasionally be slightly clunky. Paragraphing is used sufficiently. Overall, the organization meets the criteria for Band 6.5, showing a coherent overall arrangement with adequate paragraphing and logical sequencing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms related to maps and buildings such as 'layout', 'redevelopment', 'facilities', and 'reception'. Some less common items and paraphrases are attempted, such as 'diagrammatic representation' and 'undergo numerous innovations'. However, there are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies or repetitive phrasings, such as 'given sketch of a university' and 'place occupied for seating'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. This performance aligns well with Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and prepositional phrases (e.g., 'which is about 25m long', 'the outdoor courts on the west side will be replaced by a leisure pool'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, such as 'sports center of a university', 'in the south side' (instead of 'on the south side'), and 'in northeast and another in east direction'. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely obscured, and simple sentences are generally controlled. This represents a solid Band 6 performance for grammar.
