Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by comparing the present layout of the university sports centre with its future redevelopment plans. An overview is provided at the beginning, noting that various facilities are being added to accommodate different activities. Key features, such as the retention of the central 25m pool, the removal of outdoor courts, and the introduction of new amenities like a leisure pool, sports shop, café, dance studios, and a sports hall, are accurately reported. However, some minor details are slightly inaccurate, such as the statement that outdoor courts have been 'merged' rather than replaced by building extensions, and there is some minor speculation about who uses the leisure pool. Overall, the response covers the main features well, aligning with Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory paragraph containing an overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing the present layout and the proposed future changes. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'To the north side', 'whereas', and 'starting with a addition of'. However, paragraphing could be slightly more balanced, and some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, though minor cohesive slips occur, such as awkward phrasing in connecting sentences. These features place the response firmly at Band 6.5, rounded to 6.0 based on minor mechanical cohesion faults.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to maps and facilities such as 'layout', 'redevelopment', 'amenities', 'reception', and 'leisure pool'. There are, however, several lexical errors and awkward word choices throughout the text, including 'inclues' (includes), 'goung' (going), 'merget' (merged), 'ajdacent' (adjacent), and 'vistors' (visitors). Additionally, phrasing such as 'spent time' instead of 'spend time' highlights spelling and word-form issues. While less common vocabulary is attempted, these errors restrict the score to Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses ('which were present in the old layout') and participial phrases ('making it suitable for different disciplines'). There are several grammatical and mechanical errors throughout the text, including punctuation slips, missing articles, and typos like 'a addition' instead of 'an addition', and 'products which needed' instead of 'products which are needed'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear and communication is rarely impeded, supporting a Band 6 rating.
