Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to describe both the present layout and future plans of the university sports centre, referencing key features such as the 25m pool, gym, and reception. However, the response falls short in several areas. The overview is weak and confused, failing to clearly outline the overarching spatial transformation, such as the expansion into former outdoor courts. Furthermore, many spatial relationships are inaccurate or unclearly expressed, for example stating that the outdoor courts are present on all sides. Important new additions like the leisure pool, sports hall, and dance studios are mentioned, but the description lacks clear comparative reporting and precision, resulting in an underdeveloped treatment of the visual data. This corresponds to Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The text lacks proper paragraphing, presented instead as a poorly structured block of sentences. Logical progression is severely hindered by abrupt, disjointed transitions and repetitive sentence openers (e.g., repeating 'is situated the left side' and 'is located'). Cohesive devices are either missing or applied mechanically and inaccurately, making it difficult to follow the spatial relationships between the various rooms and facilities. While the writer attempts to move from the present layout to future plans, the overall arrangement lacks clear logical organisation and coherent signposting throughout. This performance aligns with Band 4.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and heavily relies on direct lifting from the prompt (e.g., 'sports centre', 'reception', 'gym', 'changing room', 'outdoor courts'). There are numerous word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'illustrares' (illustrates), 'play center', and awkward phrasing like 'dancing studio express the east side'. Less common lexical items are largely absent or misused, and spelling errors ('redevelpoment', 'futrure', 'dacncing') occur frequently, occasionally straining the reader's comprehension. This vocabulary profile reflects Band 4.0 standards.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying almost entirely on simple sentences with repetitive subject-verb-complement patterns. Complex sentences are rarely attempted, and when the student tries to link clauses, the grammar breaks down, resulting in faulty syntax and run-on structures (e.g., 'cafe and changing room are situated is the right side of the reception and sports shop is situated the left side and it is located below the leisure pool'). Punctuation and capitalization are frequently neglected at the beginning of sentences. Errors are dense and frequent, impeding clear communication at times. This warrants a Band 4.0.
