Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by comparing the present and future layouts of the university sports centre, fulfilling the basic requirement to report main features. An overview is attempted in the second paragraph, mentioning that future plans add new facilities and bring areas together. Key features such as the 25m pool remaining in place, the expansion of the gym, and the addition of a leisure pool, sports hall, dance studios, and a café are correctly identified. However, some descriptions are imprecise or contain inaccuracies compared to the visual data, such as stating that 'two new changing room will be added' when the plans show multiple new changing rooms added in different locations, and asserting that the current plan has no changing rooms when a central changing room is clearly present. Ideas are presented but remain somewhat under-developed, placing this response at Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs detailing specific features. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions, incorrect cohesive markers ('Wherever', 'Therefore', 'Everthing'), and confusing referencing. For instance, the transition 'Wherever, two outdoor courts situated east and west side' is incoherent. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is often faulty and mechanical. The relationships between sentences are not always clear, leading to a choppy and disjointed reading experience. This aligns with the Band 5.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited, basic vocabulary range with noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling. Examples of spelling errors include 'demostrate' instead of 'demonstrate'. Awkward phrasing appears throughout, such as 'current and future look', 'bringing everything into one places', and 'only pool redevelopment introduce two pools'. While the student attempts some less common topic-related vocabulary like 'redevelopment', 'facilities', and 'studios', frequent lexical inaccuracies and poor word forms cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex or compound structures are frequently faulty. Examples of grammatical errors include subject-verb agreement issues ('current version has limited facilities and have', '25m pool, changing room, reception is'), missing auxiliary verbs ('a 25m pool located in the middle'), and incorrect tense usage ('future plans added more'). Punctuation errors, such as missing spaces before commas and periods, are also present. Due to the high frequency of grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.
