Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to describe the changes shown in the two maps of the university sports centre, but it struggles with accuracy and clarity. While it identifies some of the new features—such as the leisure pool, dance studio, sports hall, sports shop, and cafe—it misinterprets several spatial relationships and key layout changes. For instance, the text claims that outdoor courts were located on the south side when they were actually on the east and west sides, and the overall description of how the building expands is confused and imprecise. Furthermore, the overview is weak, failing to clearly capture the principal trends, such as the overall expansion of the footprint and the retention of the central 25m pool. Because the data reporting is frequently inaccurate and lacks a well-developed overview, the response meets the criteria for Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is divided into four short paragraphs, showing some attempt at a logical structure. However, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing references, such as starting paragraphs with 'At the first' and 'Secondly'. Cohesive devices are either misused or mechanical (e.g., 'on the other hand', 'On the contradictory side'), which impedes the natural flow of information. Paragraphing is present, but the internal organization of sentences lacks clarity and logical linkage. Reference words like 'their' and 'these' are often ambiguous, making it difficult for the reader to follow which part of the map is being discussed. This level of organisation aligns with a Band 5 descriptor.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive, with frequent word-choice errors and awkward collocations. Examples include 'dimensions' instead of layout, 'changing in them' instead of changes, and 'main enterance' (with a spelling error). Phrases like 'on the contradictory side' are incorrect and unnatural. While the student does attempt some topic-specific vocabulary related to the maps (e.g., 'leisure pool', 'dance studio', 'sports hall'), the limited range and noticeable errors in spelling and word choice cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to a Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak throughout the text. There are numerous grammatical errors, including tense inconsistencies (mixing past and present haphazardly, as in 'outdoor courts located' and 'the pool is about 25m pool'), missing articles ('the new map have'), and faulty subject-verb agreement ('there only three main halls'). Punctuation is also problematic, particularly with run-on sentences joined improperly by commas (e.g., 'Before the constructions, outdoor courts located in both west and south side, the pool is about 25m pool...'). Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause confusion, the grammar is characteristic of Band 5.
