IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The illustration give information about how university's sports centre looks today and after refurbishment how it's look will look like. Overall, after refurbishment the university sports centre will have alot of facilities that will attract the visitors.

It is quite evident from the map that before refurbishment the sports centre has two outdoor courts which are located in west and east side of the centre. In contrast, after refurbishment the sports center will have alot of facilities as compared to now. However, at present sports centre has a 25m long swimming pool and a seating area at east side, changing room at the west side, a gym at north side of the pool. Reception is at the front of the entrance gate.

Meanwhile, after redevelopment management is deciding to add so many facilitties to facilitate it's visitors. For this they decided to build a leisure pool with it's own changing room, two sections for dance studio at the north east corner of the centre. They also decided to develop a cafeteria to deal with the hunger of the visitors and a sports shop for visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student successfully addresses the main features of the maps, noting the transformation of the outdoor courts into indoor facilities such as a leisure pool, dance studios, a sports shop, and a café, while correctly identifying that the central pool, gym, and reception remain unchanged. However, there are some minor descriptive inaccuracies regarding the precise locations of certain new features (e.g., placing dance studios at the north-east corner instead of along the easternmost wall). The overview is rather simplistic, stating merely that there will be 'alot of facilities that will attract the visitors,' rather than synthesising the key structural expansion of the centre. Overall, all parts of the prompt are covered, but development and data selection are somewhat basic.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is organised into three paragraphs, providing a basic framework with an introduction, a present description, and a future description. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In contrast,' 'However,' and 'Meanwhile,' though some feel slightly mechanical or repetitive ('after refurbishment', 'after redevelopment'). Paragraphing could be improved, as the separation of ideas lacks smooth transitional logic between the present layout and the future plans. While overall coherence is maintained and the reader can follow the comparisons, referencing and logical progression are occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully using terms like 'refurbishment', 'redevelopment', and 'cafeteria'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'alot' (instead of 'a lot'), 'facilitties', and the unidiomatic expression 'deal with the hunger of the visitors'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed success, and stylistic choices are occasionally too informal. These lexical lapses do not prevent communication, but they restrict the score to the mid-range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'It is quite evident from the map that before refurbishment the sports centre has two outdoor courts...' There are frequent grammatical errors, including tense inconsistencies (e.g., using present tense 'has' for past map features), missing articles ('in west and east side'), and redundant pronouns ('after refurbishment how it's look will look like'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but structural control is inconsistent. While communication is rarely impeded, the density of errors keeps the grammar score at a modest level.
