IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The maps illustrate the proposed layout changes to a university sports center.

Overall, the sports center is set to undergo a major expansion, shifting away from outdoor facilities toward fully indoor recreational and athletic spaces. While the central core of the building remains largely untouched, the outdoor courts on both sides will be replaced by new pools and multi -purpose halls.

Looking at the changes in details, the outdoor courts on the western side of the complex will be removed and replaced by large, irregular shaped leisure pool. Directly to the east of the new pool, the existing changing rooms, the central 25- meter pool, the gym at the northern end ,the seating area, and the southern reception area will all be retained.

To the east, the outdoor courts shown in the present plan will be completely demolished. In their place, a large new sports hall will be constructed, flanked by two new dance studios on the far eastern edge.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response effectively covers all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of the current layout and the proposed future redevelopment. The overview clearly highlights the shift from outdoor to indoor facilities and the major expansion of the building footprint. Key details, such as the addition of the leisure pool, sports hall, and dance studios, are accurately reported alongside the elements that remain unchanged, such as the 25-meter pool and central reception. The selection of information is appropriate and well-supported by the visual data, fulfilling all requirements of the task efficiently within the provided word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The writing demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is structured into appropriate paragraphs: an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs detailing the western and eastern changes respectively. Cohesive devices are used naturally and effectively, such as 'While the central core', 'Directly to the east', and 'To the east', which guide the reader smoothly through the spatial comparison. Referencing is clear, and the paragraphing contributes to a coherent and easy-to-follow layout description.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for an academic task describing a map. Phrases like 'proposed layout changes', 'major expansion', 'fully indoor recreational and athletic spaces', and 'completely demolished' demonstrate good lexical control and flexibility. There are minor typographical or collocation slips, such as 'irregular shaped' (which should be hyphenated as 'irregular-shaped') and 'in details' instead of 'in detail', but these do not impede communication and allow the writer to convey precise spatial changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing subordinate clauses and participial phrases effectively (e.g., 'shifting away from outdoor facilities toward fully indoor recreational and athletic spaces'). The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate. There is a minor punctuation spacing error ('end ,the'), but overall command of grammar and punctuation is strong, and structures are handled with good control, supporting clear communication of the visual information.
