Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The candidate attempts to describe the main features of the current and future plans of the university sports centre, meeting the 150-word requirement. However, the response lacks a clear, overall summary (overview) of the main trends or changes, which is essential for a Band 6 or above. While several features are mentioned, such as the addition of a leisure pool, sports hall, and dance studios, the description is somewhat disjointed and contains inaccuracies regarding what remains unchanged and what is added. For instance, the text states that the reception and pool remain as usual, but struggles to synthesize the spatial relationships clearly. Ideas are under-developed and lack precise comparative language, aligning best with Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is divided into short paragraphs, but the organization and progression of ideas are weak. Cohesive devices are used repetitively and often awkwardly, such as starting multiple sentences with 'On the other hand'. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial transformations from the present layout to the future plans. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal logical flow is disrupted by fragmented sentences and punctuation issues. Overall, the structure shows basic organisation but lacks clear overall progression, characteristic of Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on words directly copied from the prompt or simple terms like 'gym', 'pool', 'changing room', and 'seating'. There are noticeable lexical errors, such as spelling mistakes ('universit's', 'enterence') and awkward phrasing ('upper side', 'right side'). Attempts to use less common vocabulary are minimal. While the language is adequate to convey basic features of the maps, the limited range and frequent inaccuracies place this criterion at Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student uses a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences joined by basic conjunctions or punctuation errors. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('in west and east', 'with sports shop'), incorrect verb tenses ('there change in...'), and run-on sentences. Complex structures are rare and when attempted are often faulty. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 for overall impression.
