Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by comparing the present layout of the university sports centre with the proposed future plans. An overview is provided, highlighting the main changes such as the expansion of the building, the addition of new amenities (leisure pool, sports hall, dance studios, café, and sports shop), and the retention of core areas like the 25m pool and central reception. Key features are reported accurately and compared against the ground truth. Minor descriptive details, such as the exact positioning of rooms, are generally clear, though minor spelling slips appear. Overall, the response meets the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0; however, because all parts are covered adequately with a clear overview and relevant data selection, a band score of 7.0 is well-justified.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression from the introduction to the overview, followed by detailed paragraphs for the western and eastern sides of the facility. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different areas of the map. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as 'To commence with', 'however', and 'In the eastern side'. While some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, logical organization is maintained throughout. Referencing between the present and future states is mostly clear, though occasional phrasing could be smoother. This performance corresponds to a Band 6.5, rounded to 6.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a map description, attempting less common items such as 'improvised' (intended as improved), 'deconstruct', and 'amenities'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('univercity', 'ameneties', 'faclities', 'nort', 'whixh', 'wester', 'southwester', 'enterance', 'easter') and occasional word choice inaccuracies ('improvised' instead of 'improved', 'deconstruct' instead of 'demolished' or 'cleared'). Despite these lexical errors, the meaning is generally clear and communication is not severely impeded, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses ('which are now at both side') and participial phrases. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as 'To commence with a gym stated right at the nort will be enlarged' and missing articles or pluralization issues ('Two dance studio', 'a big sports hallwill'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical slips persist across simple and complex structures. Because the errors occur frequently enough to occasionally cause slight difficulty without entirely obscuring meaning, a band score of 5.5 is appropriate.
