Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting an overview of the present and future sports centre plans, but with significant limitations in development and selection. The writer attempts to report the main features, such as the 25m pool, gym, and new additions like the leisure pool and sports hall, but the information is presented in a very basic and repetitive manner without a clear, cohesive overview. Key spatial relationships are sometimes imprecise, and descriptions rely heavily on a sequential, 'tour-guide' approach rather than a well-synthesized academic summary. To reach higher bands, the response would need to provide a clearer overview of the main trends and changes—such as the overall expansion of the facility—and integrate comparisons between the two maps more effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organization in the text, separating the introduction, the present layout, and the future plans into distinct paragraphs. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the arrangement feels mechanical and list-like. Cohesive devices are largely inadequate or repetitive, relying heavily on additive links like 'and' and conversational phrases such as 'Now we talk about future plan'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is weak, with ideas strung together in run-on sentences without appropriate logical signposting. To improve coherence, the student should use a wider variety of cohesive devices to show contrast and comparison, and ensure that sentences are logically structured rather than chained together.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and heavily dependent on words lifted directly from the prompt, such as 'reception', 'pool', 'gym', and 'changing room'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'spot centre' instead of 'sports centre', 'firt' for 'first', and 'uper side' for 'upper side' or 'north'. These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to incorporate a wider range of vocabulary, use less common synonyms and descriptive verbs to report changes (e.g., 'expand', 'replace', 'convert'), and eliminate basic spelling and word-choice errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. The writing consists predominantly of simple sentences or poorly coordinated clauses joined by 'and', lacking successful complex sentence forms. There are frequent, persistent errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('in present', 'to main gate'), incorrect prepositions ('right side of the pool available seating'), tense inconsistencies, and severe punctuation issues such as run-on sentences with no periods. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and obscure the intended meaning. To improve this criterion, the student must focus on basic sentence boundaries, correct subject-verb agreement, proper article usage, and developing control over simple and compound sentence construction before attempting complex structures.
