Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both the present and future layouts of the university sports centre, such as the retention of the central pool and the addition of new facilities like the leisure pool, sports hall, and dance studios. However, some aspects are under-developed or lack precise spatial detail. For instance, the overview tends to use slightly subjective and vague commentary rather than purely summarising the structural changes. To reach a higher level, the response should present a more fully developed selection of key changes with clearer comparisons throughout, avoiding overly repetitive summaries.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression from an introductory overview to specific details regarding the layout changes. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing can be imprecise, seen in expressions like "As,new things were added a few old things were also removed" and the lack of proper spacing after punctuation marks throughout the text. Paragraphing is attempted, but the transition between ideas could be smoother. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more natural range of cohesive devices and ensure correct spacing and punctuation to guide the reader effortlessly through the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe basic spatial alterations and new rooms. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, incorrect word forms, and issues with collocation and spelling, such as "alternations" instead of alterations, "facillities" instead of facilities, and "dance studios of dancing". The student attempts some less common vocabulary like "modernized version" and "revolutionized", but these are imprecise and contain spelling slips. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their range of functional vocabulary for describing maps and diagrams, ensure correct word forms, and eliminate spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ability to describe future plans and past states. However, there are frequent structural awkwardness and grammar errors, such as article omissions and awkward relative clauses ("illustrate that how the layout..."), tense confusion ("will held"), and punctuation errors including missing spaces after commas and periods. These errors reflect a limited control over complex structures and punctuation rules. To move higher, the student must produce more error-free sentences, improve control over tense consistency when describing maps, and master basic punctuation and spacing conventions.
