Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by attempting to describe the main changes between the present and future layouts of the university sports centre. While key features such as the leisure pool, sports hall, and dance studios are mentioned, the information is presented in a somewhat disjointed manner, and some details are under-developed or inaccurate. For instance, the student speculates about the usage of the changing rooms ("I think one must be for ladies and the other one for gents"), which is inappropriate for an academic task that requires objective reporting rather than personal opinion. To reach a higher level, the response needs to select and report the main features more systematically without introducing speculative commentary, ensuring a fully supported and objective overview of all significant spatial transformations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organisation in the response, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The text is presented almost as a single block without appropriate paragraphing to separate the introduction, the present layout, and the future developments. Cohesive devices are minimal, mechanical, or inaccurate, such as starting sentences with repetitive transitional phrases like "In old map" and "In new plan". Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial relationships between the various facilities. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer should use logical paragraph breaks, a wider range of cohesive ties, and clear referential language to guide the reader smoothly through the spatial changes.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic information about the plans, such as "sports hall", "leisure pool", and "changing rooms". However, there are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as "remodeling of the ground", "introduce in west", "dancing studios", and "sportman" instead of "sportsmen" or "athletes". Additionally, word forms are sometimes awkward, such as "area for gym is increase". These errors reflect a restricted range of vocabulary and occasional inaccuracies that cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider and more precise range of vocabulary related to architectural changes, spatial prepositions, and collocation, while maintaining greater accuracy in word formation and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences with frequent structural errors. There are notable issues with article usage, such as "In old map" and "In new plan", subject-verb agreement errors like "two dancing studios are built", and tense inconsistencies or missing auxiliary verbs, such as "is introduce" and "is increase". Attempts at complex structures are either absent or faulty, and punctuation is weak, with missing spaces after commas and periods. These frequent errors in grammar and mechanics cause strain and difficulty for the reader. To progress, the student must work on mastering basic grammatical accuracy, including correct verb forms, prepositions, articles, and sentence punctuation, while gradually introducing error-free complex sentence patterns.
