Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting an overview of the changes between the present and future university sports centre plans, but containing inaccuracies and under-developed details. For example, the student mentions features like a swimming pool 'built for the children' and a '2.5m pool for the individuals', which misinterprets the 25m pool present in both layouts. While some key comparisons are attempted—such as noting the addition of a café, sports shop, and dance studios on the right side—the description lacks clarity and contains factual confusion regarding spatial positioning. The overview provided at the end is overly generalised ('alot of new things will be added'), missing a sharper synthesis of the main developmental trends.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation evident in the attempt to divide the response into paragraphs describing the present layout, the future changes, and a brief conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are repetitive, mechanical, or inadequate ('To begin with', 'after that', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', 'However'), and referencing is occasionally unclear, making it hard to follow the spatial relationships between the various rooms. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within sentences is frequently strained by run-on structures and unclear transitions, preventing a smooth logical flow throughout the essay.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common terms related to the diagram, such as 'redevelopment', 'reception area', and 'leisure pool', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form (e.g. 'intrestingly', 'reseption', 'outhdoor', 'righ hand', 'changin', 'lesiure', 'obbsevered'). These lexical slips and spelling errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and restrict the precision needed for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences or faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing main verbs ('a swimming pool build', 'a gym build for public'), incorrect prepositions ('in the righ hand'), and missing articles. Punctuation is also weak, leading to run-on sentences that lack proper clause boundaries. These frequent errors in grammar and sentence structure cause considerable difficulty for the reader and pull the score down.
