IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map diagrams presents the comparative analysis of a university's sports centre at present, with its redesign plan for the future in the other map. Overall, the sports centre will be expanded in the future with several addition of new areas.

At present, the west and east side of the centre consists of outdoor courts, both parallel to each other, with another huge area in between both for other facilities. This area facilitates a Gym in the north, while the seating and changing room perpendicular to the gym occupy the east and west directions, respectively. The reception is infront of the entrance, whereas a 25m swimming pool adjacent to both the gym and the reception makes its place in the middle of the room.

In contrast, the future plans accomodate a leisure pool, replacing the outdoor court in the west. The changing room, seating area and the 25m pool remained untouched , while the gym is expanded outward towards the east, with dance studios perpendicular to it. The east outdoor court is also replaced by a sports hall. The recepetion is still at the entrance with a cafe on the right side and a sports shop on the left side, with both having two changing room beside them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the sports centre layout now and in the future, providing a clear overview. However, some aspects are unevenly developed. For instance, the mention of 'several addition of new areas' in the introduction is a bit vague, and certain spatial relationships are slightly imprecise, such as stating the reception is 'infront of the entrance' rather than describing the internal layout accurately based on the source plan. Nevertheless, the key transformations—such as the replacement of outdoor courts with a leisure pool and sports hall, and the expansion of the gym—are correctly identified and compared.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the present layout and finally the future plans. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sections of the response. Cohesive devices are generally present, though referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'at present' and 'in contrast'. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, bridging the gap towards a more naturally linked text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'comparative analysis', 'perpendicular', and 'accommodate'. However, there are some word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'diagrams presents' (subject-verb agreement error mixed with lexical choice), 'infront', 'accomodate', and 'recepetion'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a Band 6 level where vocabulary attempts are present yet slightly flawed in precision and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and prepositional phrases. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'The map diagrams presents' (plural subject with singular verb), missing articles before nouns (e.g., 'facilitates a Gym', 'makes its place in the middle'), and awkward phrasing like 'with another huge area in between both for other facilities'. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the basic grammatical structures are generally under control, representing a typical performance for this level.
