Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview and detailing the main features and comparisons between the present and future layouts of the university sports centre. The overview captures the core changes well, noting that the central pool, seating, and reception remain unchanged while new facilities replace the outdoor courts. However, certain areas are treated with varying levels of development. For instance, the description of the new additions on the western and eastern sides is somewhat brief and misses minor spatial nuances, such as the exact placement of the dance studios along the easternmost wall. This lack of complete extension places the response firmly within the band where relevant ideas are presented, but some features remain slightly under-developed compared to a fully articulated, comprehensive report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into paragraphs that separate the introduction, overview, present layout, and future plans. Information is generally ordered in a logical sequence, moving systematically through the spatial features of the maps. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or somewhat faulty due to abrupt transitions between sentences and occasional referencing issues. For example, the sentence starting with 'The outdoor which was on the left...' relies on awkward referencing, and paragraph linking could be smoother to establish a more seamless progression. While paragraphing is used, the internal cohesive devices are basic, meaning the organization lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for a higher band level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating descriptive terms related to spatial layouts such as 'redevelopment', 'adjacent', 'retained', and 'expanded'. However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward word choices that reflect limitations in word formation and spelling, such as 'nothed' instead of 'north', 'enterance' instead of 'entrance', and 'incorprating' instead of 'incorporating'. Furthermore, phrases like 'present picture of sports center' lack natural collocation. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the range and precision of the response, preventing it from moving into higher lexical bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional or relative clauses such as 'how will it look like after undergoing several renewal of buildings'. There are several grammatical errors regarding verb tenses, articles, and prepositions, including 'how will it look like' (incorrect word order/structure), missing articles before nouns like 'centre' and 'gym', and awkward prepositions as in 'To the noth of the pool'. Punctuation errors are also present, such as inconsistent spacing around commas. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede overall communication, meaning the grammatical control aligns well with a mixed profile of simple and complex structures containing noticeable non-systematic errors.
