Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of the university sports centre before and after redevelopment and making relevant comparisons. For instance, the student correctly notes that outdoor courts will be replaced by a leisure pool and sports hall, and that the gym will be extended. However, some parts of the response are under-developed or lack clarity, such as the descriptions of the newly added facilities in the south-west and south-east corners. While the general layout changes are identified, the overview is somewhat brief and certain details regarding the exact positioning of the new amenities could have been extended more clearly to fully satisfy the higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression from an introductory overview to specific spatial details of the present and future plans. Paragraphing is attempted, grouping related features together, but paragraph structure is occasionally awkward and disjointed. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or faulty, and referencing is not always clear, such as abrupt transitions between sentences without adequate linking phrases. Furthermore, capitalization at the beginning of sentences and proper punctuation are inconsistently managed, which disrupts the natural flow and readability of the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic spatial changes through words like layout, makeover, extended, and converted. However, the range is limited and contains notable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'desiginind', 'afterlook', 'seting', 'sied', 'eastren', 'westren', 'deignated', and 'seprate'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, but inaccurate word forms and spelling slips occasionally impede communication or distract the reader, keeping the lexical score at a modest level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at variety with relative clauses and prepositional phrases, such as 'outdoor courts in the westren side will be converted into a leisure pool having it's deignated changing room'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, articles, and prepositions throughout the text, including missing articles ('in front of the reception had'), incorrect prepositions ('on the either sied'), and subject-verb agreement issues. These errors require some effort from the reader to parse, though they do not completely obscure the intended meaning.
