Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by addressing both the present layout and the future redevelopment plans of the university sports centre, meeting the minimum word requirement while excluding copied prompt words. Key features are reported, such as the expansion of the gym, the introduction of a leisure pool, and the addition of various rooms including a sports hall, dance studios, and a café. However, the task is addressed somewhat unevenly. While several transformations are outlined, certain details are under-developed or imprecise—for instance, the mention of an "outdoor pool" changing to a leisure pool contains a slight inaccuracy, as the source plan shows an outdoor court rather than an outdoor pool before redevelopment. To reach a higher level, the response would need to select and highlight the overarching spatial changes more clearly, ensuring complete factual precision when describing map transformations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The report presents a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical path from an introductory statement to body paragraphs detailing the specific alterations on the map. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as "Furthermore," "In addition to that," and "Moreover." However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, and referencing is occasionally unclear. For example, sentences are grouped into dense paragraphs without fully developed topical progression, and phrases like "in both sides of south" or "from right side and a sports shop from left side" lack smooth directional flow. Paragraphing is attempted, but splitting the response into more purposeful paragraphs focused on specific zones of the complex would enhance the logical flow and organizational control.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
An adequate vocabulary range is utilized to complete the task, demonstrating attempts at less common phrasing such as "redevelopment," "converted into," and "adjacent to." Nevertheless, there are noticeable lexical resource limitations and errors in word choice and spelling that prevent a higher band. For example, "severals" instead of "several," "ocuur" instead of "occur," "enterance" instead of "entrance," and "charging room" instead of "changing room" detract from the precision of the text. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they highlight a need for stronger control over word forms, spelling, and collocation when describing spatial layouts and structural modifications.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as introductory clauses ("In the future, the outdoor pool...") and relative clauses ("gym that is located..."). There are, however, frequent grammatical errors regarding articles, prepositions, and plurals that constrain the overall accuracy. Examples include missing articles («a leisure pool», «two dance studios»), prepositional errors («in both sides of south», «from right side»), and subject-verb agreement or pluralisation issues («two dance studio», «there is spaces»). Punctuation is also occasionally strained, such as double spacing issues and awkward clausal breaks. To improve, the writer needs to eliminate basic structural errors and demonstrate more consistent control over complex grammatical patterns.
