Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by identifying several key changes to the university sports centre, such as the addition of a leisure pool, sports hall, dance studios, and a café. However, the information is presented with notable omissions and some inaccuracies regarding locations and spatial relationships. For instance, the student states that the reception is going to be bigger and located at the entrance with a café and sports shop, whereas the plans show that the central reception remains unchanged while new facilities are added around it. Furthermore, the description lacks a clear overview, moving straight into specific details without summarising the main overall trends of expansion and reconfiguration. Ideas remain limited and under-developed, which prevents the response from achieving a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response struggles with logical organisation and progression. It is written as a single, unformatted block of text without paragraph breaks, making it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial transitions between different parts of the building. Cohesive devices are either missing or repetitive, and punctuation is largely neglected, with sentences frequently strung together using lowercase letters and commas. Referencing is unclear at times, particularly when pointing to locations using vague phrases like 'the left side' or 'after the cafe and sports shop'. To improve, the student needs to group related information into distinct paragraphs and use appropriate cohesive links to guide the reader logically through the diagrams.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms such as 'bigger', 'pool', 'sport centre', and 'gym'. There are noticeable word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'ongoing plans', 'universities' instead of 'university', 'lenght', 'studio' instead of 'studios', and 'br' instead of 'be'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic ideas about the plans, the frequency of inaccuracies and the lack of less common lexical items restrict the score. Incorporating precise spatial vocabulary and synonyms for expansion, such as 'enlarged', 'replaced', or 'constructed', would significantly enhance the lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical structures attempted are very basic, consisting mainly of simple sentences and repetitive 'there is' or 'there will be' constructions. The response contains frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that cause some difficulty for the reader, such as missing capitalisation at the start of sentences, missing articles ('the gym lenght'), and faulty prepositional usage ('at the left side'). Attempts at complex structures are largely absent, and punctuation is virtually ignored apart from a few full stops. To move up, the student must demonstrate a wider variety of sentence forms, improve control over articles and prepositions, and ensure correct sentence boundary punctuation.
