Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response addresses the task only minimally and fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, falling slightly short at 147 words. While the student attempts to contrast the present layout of the university sports centre with the future plans, the information is communicated in a very vague and fragmented manner. Key features of the diagrams, such as the retention of the 250-metre pool and the specific locations of new additions like the sports hall, dance studio, and leisure pool, are either omitted or described inaccurately. The overview is underdeveloped and lacks a clear summary of the main changes shown in the visual data. To improve, the writer needs to write at least the minimum required length and provide a clear, well-supported overview detailing specific spatial transformations between the two maps.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text displays some basic organization, separating the introduction, body points, and conclusion into distinct paragraphs. However, there is no clear overall progression of ideas, and the logical links between sentences are frequently faulty or absent. Cohesive devices are used inadequately and sometimes inappropriately, such as using 'At the start' and 'Conclude' to structure the response. Referencing is often unclear, leaving the reader confused about which specific areas of the plans are being discussed. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion of these paragraphs is weak. Achieving a higher band would require a clearer logical structure, appropriate transitional markers to guide the reader smoothly through the comparisons, and precise referencing of the spatial features on the diagrams.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
Vocabulary usage is basic and repetitive throughout the response, severely restricting the clarity of the description. Words and phrases such as 'physical game centre', 'charging room', and 'education platform sports centre' demonstrate a limited range and inaccurate word choice that causes significant strain for the reader. There are frequent errors in word formation and collocation, such as 'more successful for their university's students' and 'more excited university students'. To improve significantly, the student must build a wider and more precise repertoire of lexical items related to maps and building transformations, replacing basic terms with appropriate architectural and descriptive vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple and awkwardly constructed sentences. Attempts at complex sentences are consistently faulty, leading to frequent errors that obscure the intended meaning, such as in 'the university's sports centre are not focusing on their students physical activity but it will more concern more leisure places'. There are persistent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions within grammatical patterns (e.g., 'don't more develop in present'). Punctuation is also basic and occasionally mismanaged. Moving to a higher band requires a wider variety of sentence structures, better control over verb forms when describing present and future states, and a significant reduction in basic grammatical errors.
