Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by identifying some of the main changes between the present and future layouts of the university sports centre, such as the removal of outdoor courts and the addition of a leisure pool, dance studios, and a café. However, the information is presented with notable inaccuracies and omissions. For example, the writer describes the gym as being on the northern side of the pool, which is correct, but fails to clearly contrast how it expands eastward in the future plan. Furthermore, several details regarding the locations of the newly added rooms are vague or partially incorrect, reflecting an under-developed approach to summarizing the visual data. To achieve a higher score, all key features should be reported accurately with clear and comprehensive comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text exhibits an overall arrangement that attempts to follow a logical structure, moving from an introductory overview to descriptions of the present layout and then the future plans. However, cohesion is frequently mechanical and sometimes faulty, with awkward transitions between sentences such as 'Structures like, a cafe, a dance studio...' and repetitive referencing. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, present layout, and future plans, but the progression within paragraphs lacks fluidity. Cohesive devices are sometimes inadequate or inaccurate, making the flow somewhat disjointed. Improving the use of reference words and transitional phrases would enhance the logical progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that cause some difficulty for the reader. The student relies heavily on basic terminology and makes frequent word choice and word form errors, such as 'structures are develop' instead of 'developed', 'university removes' instead of 'removes', and 'east-south side' instead of 'south-east corner'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary result in awkward phrasing and inaccuracies. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to incorporate a wider range of precise lexical items related to maps and spatial changes, and ensure accurate word forms and collocations throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex or descriptive structures that contain basic errors. There are numerous issues with verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'university sports centre have', 'gym has northen side', and 'some new area are develop'. Articles are also frequently missing or misused. These frequent errors in grammar and prepositions can cause occasional strain for the reader. To improve, the writer should focus on mastering basic grammatical structures, ensuring correct verb forms, and maintaining accurate subject-verb agreement in complex sentences.
