Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the task partially, attempting to compare the present and future layouts of the university sports centre. An overview is attempted, stating that the outdoor courts will be replaced by multiple purposes, and some key features such as the central pool, reception, and gym extension are mentioned. However, the development of ideas is limited and mechanical. For instance, the phrase 'future plans to make the both east and west courts changing to multiple purposes' lacks clarity and fails to fully explain the extent of the new facilities. Furthermore, several details are imprecise or confused, such as the reference to 'charging room' instead of changing room, and the vague description of the various new zones like the sports hall, dance studios, and café. To move to a higher level, the student needs to select and report the main features more accurately and provide a fully developed comparison without losing clarity in the overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response shows some organisation, beginning with an introductory sentence and attempting an overview. However, there is no clear overall progression throughout the text, making the spatial relationships difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are either missing, inadequate, or inaccurate, such as starting a sentence with 'So, future plans seem to...' which sounds conversational rather than academic. Paragraphing is also poorly managed, as the text is clumped into dense blocks without logical separation between the overview, present features, and future changes. Reference words are sometimes unclear, leaving the reader confused about which part of the map is being discussed. To achieve a higher band, the information must be logically sequenced using a wider range of appropriate cohesive devices and clear paragraph structures.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'infrastructure', 'redevelopment', and 'prominent', but these are often used inaccurately or unnaturally, as seen in 'make multiple changing with prominent is making leisure pool'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, including 'deprictes' (depicts), 'charging room' (changing room), and 'dance club' instead of dance studio. Spelling and word formation errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader in grasping the exact meaning. To improve this criterion, the writer should focus on using precise vocabulary relevant to spatial changes and maps, such as 'relocated', 'converted', or 'expanded', while ensuring correct word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The range of grammatical structures is limited, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside poorly constructed complex attempts. There are frequent errors in grammar and sentence structure that cause difficulty for the reader, such as 'The diagrams illustrates', where subject-verb agreement fails. Other errors include missing articles ('on east and west side'), incorrect prepositions ('below charging room'), and awkward relative clauses ('future plans to make the both east and west courts changing to multiple purposes'). Attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to distorted or confusing meanings. To reach a higher standard, the writer must improve control over basic grammar, ensure accurate verb forms and prepositions, and produce error-free complex sentences.
