Student answer (Band 5.5)
The plan compares the university sports Centre now and also illustrates the plan for the future.
overall, At the moment, in east and west there is outdoor courts, while inside the Centre a gym is followed by not only a changing room but also seating, The future plan shows development in the infrastructure of that building, at the top east corner a dance studio is located, there are more facilities like two different changing rooms are available one is followed by a cafe in contrast, other one is followed by sports shop.
Right now there is Reception next to the 25m pool this is same as in the future. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main parts of the task by outlining the present layout and the future redevelopment plans of the university sports centre, successfully meeting the word count requirement. However, the development of ideas is limited and some features are under-developed or somewhat confused. For instance, the overview attempts to highlight general changes, but details regarding spatial relationships are occasionally unclear. Key features such as the retention of the central 25m pool, reception, and seating are mentioned, but other major additions like the new leisure pool and sports hall lack fully extended comparisons. To reach a higher level, the response needs a more cohesive summary and a clearer, more thorough comparison of all significant structural transformations shown in the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a basic logical arrangement in the text, beginning with an introductory statement and attempting an overview before discussing specific locations. However, the overall progression lacks clarity and flow. Paragraphing is poorly handled, with the text clustering into dense blocks rather than well-defined paragraphs that separate the overview from the specific details. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as the abrupt transitions using 'overall, At the moment' and 'in contrast, other one is followed by'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the precise location of facilities across the two plans. Improved paragraph breaks and smoother transitional phrases would enhance the logical flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate to communicate basic information about the plans, employing terms such as 'infrastructure', 'facilities', and 'reception'. However, the range is limited, and there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'there is outdoor courts' (plural/singular agreement), 'the centre area is roughly the same', and 'new leisure pool will build'. Additionally, spelling and word formation lapses occur. To achieve a higher score, the response needs to incorporate a wider range of less common lexical items related to maps and spatial descriptions with greater precision, while avoiding repetitive phrasing and basic vocabulary slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and sentence structure is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb tenses and forms, such as 'will build' instead of the passive form 'will be built', and incorrect article usage like 'at top east corner'. Punctuation and capitalization are also problematic, evidenced by lowercase beginnings of sentences after commas or periods, as seen in 'overall, At the moment' and 'seating, The future plan'. These frequent errors require the reader to occasionally puzzle over the meaning. A greater variety of error-free complex structures and improved control over basic grammatical boundaries are required to lift this criterion.
