Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response covers the main changes and gives a clear overview: the centre expands over the former outdoor courts, while the original pool and several facilities remain. It also accurately identifies the new leisure pool and the eastern additions, including the sports hall, dance studios, café and changing room. These details are well selected and the comparison between the present and future layouts is clear. A small amount of precision is lost in the description of the south-west additions: the changing room and sports shop are placed below the leisure pool, but “near the entrance” is not a clear account of their exact position. The gym’s eastward extension is also described as slight, which is not specified by the plan. Overall, the key features are well covered, with only minor imprecision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the current and planned layouts. This gives the reader a clear progression from the overall change to the details on each side of the building. Linking phrases such as “At present,” “In the future,” and “On the east side” help distinguish the two plans and guide the comparison. The final sentence usefully returns to the facilities that remain. Some details are packed into long lists, particularly the sentence describing the current centre, so the relationships between locations are not always easy to follow. More precise grouping by direction, and clearer punctuation between listed features, would make the cohesion smoother and less dependent on repeated location markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for describing a plan, and the response uses relevant terms such as “expand,” “outwards,” “leisure pool,” “sports hall,” and “dance studios.” It also attempts a range of location language, including “on the west side” and “next to the reception.” However, several spelling errors—“significantly,” “surrounded,” “replace,” and “café” are misspelled or inconsistently written—and some word combinations are inaccurate or awkward. For example, “a 25m pool surrounded located” and “a gym occupied on the north” do not express the intended relationships naturally. “The former outdoor area will features” also contains a word-form error. Greater accuracy in spelling and more natural collocations would make the description clearer and more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the contrast between what will be added and what will remain. Most of the intended meaning is understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. In “the university sports centre looks now,” the verb pattern is unsuitable for describing a plan; “the layout of the centre at present” would be more accurate. “The former outdoor area will features” has an incorrect verb form, while “another changing rooms” has a number-agreement problem. The long list in the present-layout paragraph also lacks clear grammatical parallelism, and “through the gym will be enlarged” uses an incorrect connector. Check verb forms, singular/plural agreement, and sentence structure when combining several features.
