IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plan demonstrates how the university's sports centre will look after redevelopment and how it looks at present.

Overall, the university's sport centre is very small as compared to future plans. The sports centre will extend to almost double of its current size after redevelopment. Outdoor courts will be removed in future and use this space to add more features in sports centre.

In the right part of sports centre, new sports hall will add and also two dance studios will add in the corner of layout. While in the both corners of bottom of sports centre, changeing rooms are planned to add in future. Beside right changing room, a small cafe will be added.

On the top of layout, Gym is planned to extend and connect with upper dance studio in future. While on the left side of sports centre, leisure pool will be added. Beside left changing room a new sports shop will also added in future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation accurately: the centre expands into the former outdoor-court areas, with a leisure pool, sports hall, dance studios, café and additional changing rooms. The overview also captures the broad increase in facilities, and most locations you describe match the plans. This meets the task well, with some features reported more fully than others. However, the comparison would be clearer if you mentioned what remains unchanged, especially the 25m pool, central changing room, seating and reception. The statement that the gym will “connect with upper dance studio” is not supported by the plan: the gym extends east along the north side, while the studios are on the eastern wall. More precise coverage of these relationships would strengthen the overview and detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the eastern and western changes. This makes the main information easy to locate. However, progression within the detail paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, particularly through repeated “While” and “Beside” openings. The phrase “In the right part” is also less precise than a consistent use of compass directions, and “both corners of bottom” makes the locations harder to follow. Grouping the changes by side and linking them with varied, accurate transitions would improve cohesion. Include a brief comparison of retained facilities as well as additions so the description moves more systematically from the present layout to the proposed one.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant plan vocabulary, including “redevelopment,” “Outdoor courts,” “leisure pool,” “sports hall” and “dance studios,” so the reader can understand the main changes. There is also some attempt to describe spatial relationships. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “extend to almost double of its current size,” “will add,” and “in the corner of layout” are not natural formulations. “Changeing” is misspelled, and “sport centre” is inconsistent with the more appropriate “sports centre.” Aim for precise verbs such as “expand,” “be added” and “replace,” and use location phrases such as “in the south-east corner.” This would make the description more fluent and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast introduced by “While,” and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, control of sentence structure and verb forms is uneven. For example, “new sports hall will add” and “a new sports shop will also added” need passive constructions (“will be added”), while “the university's sport centre is very small as compared to future plans” has an awkward comparison structure. The sentence beginning “While in the both corners” is not a complete, well-formed clause, and articles and prepositions are sometimes inaccurate. Practise forming complete comparison sentences and consistent future-passive structures; this will improve accuracy while allowing you to retain varied sentence patterns.
