IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The figures illustrate the structure of sports center in university at present, and how it will look after refurbishment.

As an overall trend, the sports center is planned to undergo significant expansion and modernisation. The existing 25m pool and gym will remain, while several latest facilities, including cafe, shop, dance studio, leisure activities will be added. The outdoor courts will also be removed.

Currently, a 25m pool is located in the middle of the sports center with a gym directly above to it. A changing room is situated on the western side of the pool, while seating is provided on the eastern side. The reception is positioned at the southern entrance. There are also outdoor courts on both western and eastern sides of the main building.

Under the proposed redevelopment, building will be considerably larger. A leisure pool will be constructed on the western side, while sports hall and dance studio will be developed on eastern side. The location of pool and gym will remain similar. Additionally, two extra changing rooms will be created on both corners of south-west and south-east side respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You give a clear overview of the main transformation: the centre will expand, the outdoor courts will disappear, and new facilities will be introduced. The present layout is described accurately, including the pool’s central position and the surrounding gym, changing room, seating and reception. You also identify the leisure pool and eastern additions. However, some future details are incomplete or imprecise: the gym extends eastward rather than simply remaining in a similar location, and the two dance studios are not clearly distinguished. The café and sports shop are omitted, while “two extra changing rooms” is broadly correct but does not mention their specific south-west and south-east locations. More precise coverage of these changes would make the report more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, a description of the current plan and a paragraph on the redevelopment. This gives the reader a clear progression from the existing arrangement to the proposed changes. Linking expressions such as “while,” “Additionally” and “Under the proposed redevelopment” help connect comparisons and additions. The information is generally grouped by location, especially in the description of the current plan. To make the progression more flexible and complete, organise the future details systematically from west to east or from north to south, and include the café and shop within that sequence. A few references, such as “the location of pool and gym,” could also be made more specific.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing plans, including “located,” “situated,” “positioned,” “expansion,” and “redevelopment.” These choices help convey spatial relationships and planned changes. There are also some imprecise or unnatural expressions: “latest facilities” does not clearly mean newly added facilities, and “leisure activities” is not the name of a feature shown on the plan. “The figures illustrate” is also less appropriate for a pair of plans than wording that refers directly to the layouts. These choices do not prevent understanding, but greater precision and more natural collocations would strengthen the description. Use the labels shown in the plan where possible, such as “leisure pool,” “sports shop,” and “café.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including effective contrasts with “while” and a relative clause in “outdoor courts on both western and eastern sides.” Most sentences communicate the intended layout clearly. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles and prepositions: “the structure of sports center in university” needs more accurate article use, and “directly above to it” has an unnecessary preposition. In “Under the proposed redevelopment, building will be considerably larger,” an article is needed before “building.” The phrase “on eastern side” also needs an article. These are generally understandable, but checking articles and preposition patterns would improve accuracy while preserving your varied sentence structure.
