IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram shows current and a future redevelopment plan layout of a university's sports centre.
Overall, the present layout of the sports centre only shows a reception, while the future layout also includes sports shop, and a cafe on the left and right side of the reception. Moreover, the future layout has removed outdoor courts which are currently on the left and right side of the main sports centre.
The renovation of the university sports centre plans to increase the overall area of the sports centre by making more room for the gym. However, the 25m pool size would remain untouched. It also plans to include a sports hall on the right side of the pool seating in the place of the current right outdoor court. The future layout of the sports centre also includes a leisure pool on the left side of changing room in the place of the current left outdoor court.
It also plans to include two more changing rooms in the sports centre: one on the left side of the cafe, and another on the right side of the sports shop. Moreover, the future layout of the sports centre also shows two dance studios on the left side of sports hall.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main change—the centre expands into the areas occupied by the outdoor courts—and compare several facilities in the present and proposed layouts. The 25m pool is correctly described as remaining, and you note the new leisure pool and sports hall. However, the overview is partly inaccurate: the current plan includes more than a reception, including the gym, pool, changing room and seating. Some locations are also misreported: the two dance studios are on the eastern side of the sports hall, not the left, and the changing rooms are not positioned as described relative to the café and sports shop. The gym’s eastward extension and the retained seating and reception could also be reported more clearly. This gives a relevant account, but some features are less fully and accurately covered.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing changes. The sequence from the general expansion to individual facilities is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “However” help connect points. However, the overview’s focus on the reception, shop and café does not establish the most important overall changes as effectively as it could. Repeated openings such as “The future layout…” and “It also plans…” make the progression somewhat mechanical. Some references, including “one on the left side of the cafe, and another on the right side of the sports shop,” are difficult to interpret accurately against the plan. Grouping additions by west and east sides would make the organisation more precise and cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of task vocabulary, including “redevelopment,” “layout,” “outdoor courts,” “leisure pool” and “sports hall,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is also some variation in how you describe change, such as “removed,” “increase” and “include.” However, several phrases are imprecise or awkward for describing plans. “The present layout … only shows a reception” misrepresents the facilities, while “making more room for the gym” does not clearly convey that the gym extends eastward. “On the left and right side” is less precise than using compass directions, and “in the place of” is repeated where “replaces” would be more concise. More accurate spatial vocabulary and less repetition would provide the precision expected at the next level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “However, the 25m pool size would remain untouched” and the relative clause “which are currently on the left and right side.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the future forms are generally appropriate for proposed changes. Some grammatical choices are less controlled, however. In “plans to include sports shop, and a cafe,” the singular count noun needs an article, and the comma before “and” is unnecessary. “The renovation … plans to increase” also gives the renovation an awkward grammatical role; “The plan is to expand…” would be clearer. In addition, “two more changing rooms” is ambiguous because the plan adds two rooms, rather than necessarily two beyond an already stated number. Greater accuracy in articles and sentence phrasing would strengthen the response.
