IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two plans illustrate the current layout of a university sports centre and proposed modifications for its future redevelopment.

Overall, the sport centre will undergo a significant expasion, transforming for a partially outdoor facility into a compeletly enclosed indoor complex. Major structural changes include the elimination of outdoor courts to make room for new indoor amenities, the expansion of the gym, and addition of several new functional rooms.

In the centre of the complex, 25 meter swimming pool, the reception area near the southern entrance, and the viewing seating area to the east of the pool will remain entairly enchanged. However, the gym stiuated directly north of the pool is scheduled of a significantly enlarged, expanding eastward to warp around the top of the seating area.

More extensive renovations will occur on the eastrn or weastrn wings of the site. The outdoor coutrs on the westrn side will be demolished to construct a new leisure pool which will be acompaind by changing room and sport shop located just on the west entrance. Similarly, the outdoor courts on the eastern side will be replaced by a large sport hall and two dancing room. Finaly a new cafe will be added to the east of the reception entrance and two new changing rooms will be built to serve the eastern and western wings.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response gives a clear overview of the main transformation: the centre expands into the former outdoor-court areas and gains indoor facilities, while several central features remain. It also reports many relevant locations, including the leisure pool on the west, the sports hall and dance studios on the east, and the gym’s eastward extension. This coverage is strong and the main comparisons are easy to identify. A few details are imprecise: the future plan shows two new changing rooms, one in each wing, rather than suggesting that both are newly built without clearly locating them; the café is in the south-east corner, not simply east of the reception entrance. The gym is described as wrapping around the seating, which overstates its position. More exact spatial reporting would strengthen an otherwise well-developed summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on the central facilities, and a final paragraph covering the wings. This gives the reader a clear route through the comparison, and transitions such as “However,” “More extensive renovations,” and “Similarly” help connect changes. The final paragraph, though, groups several separate additions together, so the locations of the eastern café and changing room become less clear; “two new changing rooms” also makes the west/east arrangement harder to follow. Some linking is slightly mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “new” and the sequence of “Similarly” and “Finally.” To move further, organise the details more precisely by side and use clearer references to each facility.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

There is a useful range of task-related vocabulary, including “redevelopment,” “elimination,” “amenities,” “enlarged,” and “renovations,” which allows the writer to describe both the overall plan and specific changes. However, spelling and word-choice errors are conspicuous and sometimes interrupt the otherwise clear message: “expasion,” “compeletly,” “entairly,” “eastrn,” and “coutrs” should be corrected. Some collocations are also inaccurate, such as “sport centre,” “dancing room,” and “west entrance”; the plan shows a sports centre, dance studios, and a western area rather than a named west entrance. Aim for accurate facility names and proofread spelling, while retaining the more precise vocabulary already attempted.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of sentence forms, including a clear overview sentence and longer sentences with subordinate clauses, such as “The outdoor courts on the western side will be demolished to construct a new leisure pool…” Meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. In “transforming for a partially outdoor facility,” the construction after “transforming” is not grammatical; use “transforming from a partially outdoor facility.” The phrase “is scheduled of a significantly enlarged” has an incorrect verb pattern and form; write “is scheduled to be significantly enlarged.” Articles are also missing in “25 meter swimming pool” and “accompanied by changing room and sport shop.” More consistent control of verb patterns, articles, and plural forms would make the complex sentences more accurate.
