IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

These structural drawings of the university's sports centre show the changes in the centre after the reconstruction. There are multiple differences between the drawings for current time and for the future.

At a glance, it can be noticed that the future plannings involve construction of a leisure pool with an attached changing room. This replaces the outdoor courts on the western side of the changing room as per the present planning of the centre. The courts on the eastern side of the seating are replaced with a sports hall and two dance studios. In the new structure, in the southern side of these, a changing room is located. The reception area is bigger after reconstruction, it has a sports shop on the western side closer to the leisure pool and changing room and a cafe on the the eastern side closer to the sports hall and changing room.

The central structure of the pool surrounded by the seating, changing room and receptions remains the same. Overall, these plans show the expansion of the university's sports centre to include more facilities for the students.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main change as an expansion that adds facilities, and you compare several important features, including the leisure pool, sports hall, dance studios, café and sports shop. The statement that the central pool and nearby seating and changing room remain is also relevant. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the reception does not become bigger, and the sports shop and café are added in the south-west and south-east areas rather than being described as part of an enlarged reception. The gym’s eastward extension and the new eastern changing room are also omitted. This gives a generally relevant account, but some features are covered more fully than others and a few relationships need clearer reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, a paragraph describing proposed changes, and a concluding overview. The sequence from the western additions to the eastern facilities helps the reader follow the plan, and phrases such as “At a glance” and “Overall” signal the purpose of each section. However, the second paragraph combines several locations in long sentences, making some relationships difficult to track—for example, the sentence about the sports hall, dance studios and changing room. “The central structure” is also a broad reference, and “receptions” is unclear when referring to the existing reception area. Grouping the west, centre and east more distinctly, with precise references, would make the progression smoother and cohesion less dependent on general linking phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a redevelopment, including “reconstruction,” “replaces,” “expansion” and “facilities.” These choices communicate the main changes, and the response avoids excessive repetition of basic terms. Some expressions are imprecise or awkward, however: “future plannings” is not a natural form, “current time” is vague, and “on the western side of the changing room” does not clearly locate the former courts. “The reception area is bigger” also uses a broad description that does not accurately convey the plan. Aim for more precise map language such as “to the west of,” “in the south-east corner” and “is extended,” and check collocations and countable forms to improve naturalness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “a leisure pool with an attached changing room” and the contrast expressed through “remains the same.” Most of the meaning is understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions remain. For example, “the future plannings involve” has an unsuitable plural form, while “in the southern side of these” uses an incorrect preposition and an unclear reference. The phrase “on the the eastern side” repeats the article, and “the central structure of the pool surrounded by…” lacks a clear grammatical connection between the pool and the listed facilities. Review articles, prepositions and sentence boundaries, while retaining the range of structures you already attempt.
