IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The map below illustrates the present and the future plan of a university's sports centre.

Overall, at present the sports centre is built around a 25m pool which is rectangular in shape. While many new facilities are expected to be built in the future, the layout observes several facilities that have remained the same like the gym, seating area and the changing room.

The current stucture of the sports centre has outdoor courts on either sides of the indoor area unlike the future plan. After redevelopment, the gym area would increase in size and be attached to a new sports hall. In the north east corner are two dance studios. The south east and south west corners would have two additional changing rooms with cafe attached to one and sports shop attached to the other. A new addition to the layout would be a leisure pool to the left corner between two changing rooms.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main contrast between the current and proposed layouts, including the removal of the outdoor courts and the addition of a leisure pool, sports hall, dance studios, café and shop. The overview also notes that some facilities remain, which helps address the task. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the gym is not attached to the sports hall; it extends eastward along the north, while the sports hall is east of the seating. The two new changing rooms are in the south-west and south-east, but the café and shop are separate facilities rather than being attached to them. The leisure pool is on the west side, not simply in a “left corner.” More precise spatial descriptions and fuller coverage of what remains unchanged would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph describing the current and future arrangements. Its progression from the existing courts to the proposed additions is generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “After redevelopment” and “In the north east corner” help signal changes and locations. However, the final paragraph combines several separate areas in a compressed sequence, making some relationships difficult to interpret—for example, the café and shop are described as attached to changing rooms, and the leisure pool is said to be “between two changing rooms.” The overview also lists facilities that remain without clearly distinguishing their positions. Grouping details by west, centre and east, and using clearer references, would make the organisation more precise and less dependent on a list-like sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “redevelopment,” “layout,” “outdoor courts,” “leisure pool” and “south east corner.” These terms make the main changes understandable, and there is some variation in how locations and facilities are described. At times, however, word choice or collocation is imprecise: “the layout observes several facilities” is not a natural way to say that facilities remain, and “attached to” gives an inaccurate impression of the café and shop’s relationship to the changing rooms. “Left corner” is also less precise than a compass direction. There is a spelling error in “stucture,” and “cafe” should be written “café” (or “cafe” consistently without the accent). Prefer standard plan-description language such as “retains,” “located,” and “occupies” to improve precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “While many new facilities are expected to be built in the future…” and the comparison introduced by “unlike the future plan.” Most sentences communicate the intended changes, and the passive construction “would increase in size” is appropriate for a planned redevelopment. Some grammatical control is less secure: “the layout observes several facilities that have remained the same” has an unclear clause structure, while “The south east and south west corners would have two additional changing rooms with cafe attached to one…” needs clearer sentence construction and articles. The opening sentence of the final paragraph also shifts between present and future without a fully consistent time frame. Use direct structures such as “Several facilities will remain unchanged” and check articles and tense consistency.
