IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps illustrate the current layout of the University Sports Center and the proposed redevelopment plan for future plans.

Overall, the plan involves major changes, including the addition of a leisure pool, a cafe, and a sports shop, one extra changing room, and the removal of outdoor courts. The area will become wider.

Currently, outdoor courts occupy the west side, but the plan shows it being replaced by a leisure pool, whereas the east side courts are replaced by the dance studio. A new sports hall will also be built.

Furthermore, changing rooms are added in two places to the west and east corners, and a sports hall will be constructed nearby the seating area. The cafe and a sports hall will be designed at the entrance of the University Sports Center; one is on the left side, the other on the opposite side.

Moreover, the gym, reception, and 25 m pool remain in the same location as now, and in future plans, rest of the two other places are also there that is, the seating area and a changing room which doesnot change future location.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main transformation clearly: the centre expands, outdoor courts are removed, and facilities such as a leisure pool, café and sports shop are added. You also correctly note that the 25m pool, gym and reception remain in place. However, some locations are misreported or unclear. The eastern courts are replaced by a sports hall and two dance studios, not by a dance studio alone; the café and new changing room are in the south-east, rather than at the entrance. The gym extends eastward, and the seating remains in its original position. These details matter in a plan description, and several additions are mentioned without precise placement. More accurate comparisons and a clearer account of the expanded layout would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing changes and retained features. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “Moreover” help signal the stages of the description. However, progression is not always clear because details are repeated: the sports hall is mentioned in both the third and fourth paragraphs, and the changing rooms are also revisited. Some references are difficult to follow, especially “the rest of the two other places,” which does not clearly identify the seating and central changing room. Grouping the western changes together, then the eastern changes, before summarising unchanged facilities would create a more logical sequence and make the comparisons easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a redevelopment, including “layout,” “occupy,” “replaced,” “remain,” and “constructed.” These choices communicate the broad changes, and terms such as “leisure pool” and “sports hall” are appropriate to the plan. Some wording is imprecise or repetitive, however. “The plan shows it being replaced” leaves the referent of “it” unclear, while “designed at the entrance” is not a natural way to describe the café and sports hall’s locations. “The area will become wider” is understandable but less precise than describing the building’s expansion. Use more exact location phrases and vary repeated terms such as “plan” and “built” to improve precision and fluency.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “whereas” and clauses introduced by “Moreover.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions reduce clarity. In “the plan shows it being replaced,” the pronoun reference is unclear; “the café and a sports hall will be designed at the entrance” uses an unsuitable verb pattern for location. The final sentence, “rest of the two other places are also there that is,” has problems with articles, agreement and clause structure, making the intended comparison difficult to understand. There is also a tense inconsistency in “doesnot change future location.” Aim for complete, direct sentences and check articles, agreement and verb forms when describing what remains unchanged.
