IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The maps given below shows the design of a university's sports area in the present time and the changes in the centre that will take place after refurbishment.

Overall, at present the sport's complex has 3 basic divisions segregated by outdoor courts on both the side respectively and one major area at the centre with reception desk, pool seating area, gym and changing room. Contrastingly, in the development plan of the future it is visible that the premises would be devepoled into a huge area offering more facilites to people.

A glance at the picture reveals at present, the sport's premises is segregated into three different parts. The middle part accounts for the major facilities such as a swimming pool, reception desk at the enterance, seating, changing room and the gym at the corners. While, outdoor courts are placed at the west and east to the centre.

Further analysis of the diagram reveals the development plans for the future. The major visible changes shows the comparison of the extension of whole sport's area making it much more bigger than it is now. The indoor plan of reception, 25metre pool, seating area and changing room stays at the same place as it is now, although more facilities such as leisure pool, another changing rooms, sports shop, cafe, sports hall and two dance studios takes place in the future as shown in the given future plan of the centre. A huge leisure pool would be installed in the west side of the area and intrestingly two dance studios will be constructed in the adjusant corners facing north and east respectivly. At the left of the entrance, a shorts shop would be build for people and on the right of the entrance a small cafetaeria will be made.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You give a clear overview of the main transformation: the centre expands, the outdoor courts are replaced by indoor facilities, and several existing features remain in place. The response also identifies many additions, including the leisure pool, sports hall, dance studios, shop and café, so the key changes are substantially covered. Some details, however, are inaccurate or imprecise. The dance studios are along the eastern wall, one north of the other, rather than in “adjusant corners facing north and east”; the shop is in the south-west area, not simply “at the left of the entrance.” The description of the present layout as three “divisions” is also unclear. More precise spatial comparisons and a concise overview would make the account more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to the present layout and then the proposed redevelopment. This gives the reader a generally logical route through the information, and phrases such as “Further analysis” signal the shift to the future plan. However, the overview repeats ideas that are then restated in the next paragraph, and some linking is mechanical. The long final paragraph combines several changes without a clear west-to-east or north-to-south order, making locations harder to follow. “While” begins a fragment after the preceding sentence, and references such as “the left of the entrance” are not sufficiently precise. Grouping details by area and using clearer comparisons would improve progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “leisure pool,” “sports hall” and “dance studios,” which helps convey the planned facilities. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “major visible changes.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “sport’s complex,” “much more bigger,” “shorts shop” and “cafetaeria” may distract or confuse the reader. Spelling errors such as “devepoled,” “enterance” and “intrestingly” are noticeable, while “facilities” is misspelled. Prefer precise, conventional map language—for example, “sports centre,” “will be expanded,” and “will be added”—and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “although” and “as shown,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors occur often enough to make some sentences awkward. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “the maps … shows,” “the major visible changes shows,” and “two dance studios … takes place.” There are also faulty constructions, such as “the middle part accounts for the major facilities” and the fragment beginning “While, outdoor courts…”. Comparatives are incorrectly formed in “much more bigger,” and articles and plurals are not consistently controlled. Work on agreement, complete sentence structure, and accurate comparative forms; shorter sentences would help you maintain control while still using some complex structures.
