IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two given illustrations show the present layout of a university's sports centre and also the future plans of it's redevpelopment. The redevelopment plans suggest that the overall infrastructure of the Sports Centre would be expanded in size and a lot of new facilities are planned to be added to the current layout.
The present layout shows that , the sports centre consists of a 25 m pool , a gym towards the north of the Pool , a changing room towards west of the Pool, a seating area to the east of the Pool and a reception to the south of the Pool . Upon entering the Sports Centre we encounter the reception area first , towards the west side of the Reception we have the entrace to the Changing room , which further provides the access to the pool . While the entrance to the seating area lies east to the reception. In addition to that, two outdoor courts are present towards the east and west of the sports centre respectively.
Future redevelopment plans include the addition of a cafe and a sports shop near the reception area and expansion of the Gym area. The outdoor courts are planned to be included inside the sports centre and would be converted to a leisure pool on the west and a sports hall with two dance studios on the east . Two additional changing rooms are also visible in the redevelopment plan, one near the Leisure pool and the other near the Sports hall.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You give a clear overview that the centre will expand and gain facilities, then describe the existing arrangement and the main planned changes. Most locations are reported accurately, including the leisure pool to the west, sports hall and dance studios to the east, and the two added changing rooms. However, some details are imprecise: the café and sports shop are not both simply “near the reception area”; the shop is in the south-west and the café in the south-east. You also omit the planned extension of the gym and the fact that the original pool, seating, reception and central changing room remain in place. More precise coverage of these features would make the account more complete and better supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a sensible overall progression: an introductory overview, a paragraph on the current layout, and a final paragraph on redevelopment. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and phrases such as “In addition to that” and “Future redevelopment plans include” help signal relationships between ideas. The organisation is not fully controlled, however. The sentence beginning “Upon entering” introduces extra detail about access routes, then the next sentence shifts to the seating entrance, which interrupts the description of the main layout. Some linking phrases are also mechanical, and the final paragraph groups several changes into long sentences. Grouping changes by west, centre and east would create clearer progression and more flexible cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “layout,” “redevelopment,” “facilities,” “converted” and “towards the east and west.” These choices communicate the main changes, though some wording is repetitive or imprecise: “area” and “Pool” recur frequently, and “included inside the sports centre” is less exact than describing the courts as being incorporated into an expanded building. There are also spelling errors in “redevpelopment” and “entrace,” and “it's” is an inaccurate written form in this context. Aim for more precise location language and check spelling and apostrophes carefully; this would improve control without requiring unusually advanced vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including relative clauses such as “which further provides the access to the pool” and a contrast introduced by “While.” Meaning is generally understandable, but errors in sentence construction and punctuation recur. For example, “The present layout shows that , the sports centre consists…” has an unnecessary comma after “that,” while “While the entrance to the seating area lies east to the reception” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence fragment. The future description also shifts between “include” and “would be converted,” weakening consistency in tense and structure. Practise complete sentences, consistent past/present/future framing, and accurate comma use; these are the main limits on grammatical control.
