IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plan provides the comparative overview of the layout of a university before and after its redevelopment.

Overall, the most notable feature is that the redevelopment plan puts more emphasis on sports, dance and other activities which results in the outdoor courts being occupied by these halls.

A closer look to the plan reveals that the core of the sports centre remains the same and it has modifications in the outdoor courts. The court on the right of the centre is occupied by a leisure pool followed by a changing room and a sports shop to its south.

Turning to the right side of the centre, the court is planned to be redeveloped into a sports hall followed by two dance studios to its east and a changing room and cafe to its south direction. The area of the gym is also increased in comparision with the present sports centre. Therefore, it is observed that the new plan is more focussed towards sports and other activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You give a relevant overview by noting that the centre’s core remains and that the redevelopment adds facilities in place of the outdoor courts. You also identify several key changes, including the leisure pool, sports hall, dance studios and expanded gym. However, the west–east locations are reversed: the leisure pool, changing room and sports shop are on the west, not the right/east, while the sports hall and café are on the east. The description also omits the retained 25m pool, seating and reception, and does not clearly explain the gym’s extension along the northern side. These omissions and the location error make some features less fully and accurately reported than others. Use the compass directions consistently and cover the main retained features as well as additions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing changes. Phrases such as “Overall” and “Turning to” help signal the stages of the description, and the reader can follow the broad comparison. However, the organisation is weakened by the reversed “right” and “left” descriptions, which makes the spatial progression confusing. The final sentence repeats the general point that the new plan focuses on activities rather than adding a distinct comparison. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly “Therefore,” where a direct summary would be clearer. Group the changes by west and east, use compass directions, and distinguish retained facilities from new ones to make the progression more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “redevelopment,” “occupied,” “leisure pool,” “sports hall” and “dance studios.” These terms make the main changes understandable, and you attempt more formal phrasing such as “comparative overview.” Some choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing plans: “puts more emphasis on” suggests a change in priority rather than a physical layout, while “the court … is occupied by” is less direct than saying a facility replaces it. There are also spelling errors in “comparision” and “focussed.” Aim for precise spatial and change vocabulary, and check spelling and collocations. This would make the description more natural without requiring a more elaborate style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “which results in the outdoor courts being occupied” and the comparison “The area of the gym is also increased in comparison with…”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, so grammatical control is generally effective. Some errors remain: “A closer look to the plan” uses an incorrect preposition, and “a changing room and cafe to its south direction” has an awkward grammatical construction. The sentence beginning “Turning to the right side…” also runs into the next sentence without a space after the full stop. Practise accurate preposition patterns and concise location phrases, and proofread sentence boundaries. More consistently controlled complex sentences would strengthen the range already shown.
