IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Thee picture illustrates the layout of a university’s sports centre at present, and how it will look after redevelopment. Overall, several developments are being included into the new layout of the sports centre commencing with the merging of the outside courts on the east and west respectively into the one main sports complex.

With the present layout, the university sports centre consists of two outside courts situated on the east and west side of the main building respectively. The main buidling consists of an reception section, with a pool situated at the centre with changing room on the left side and seating for spectators on the right respectively. At the north of the pool, the gym is located.

The redevelopments include merging the outside courts with the main building for better space allocation. Some of the facilities are kept at their previous location such as the reception, pool, changing rooms, gym and lastly the seating area.

The outside court which was situatted on the left side after merging is being converted into a leisure pool along with its own designated changing room. As for the outside court situated on the east is being converted into sports hall and dance studio along with its changing room. There is a newly established sports shop and a cafe for spectators and athletes.

To summarize, the new future plans for this university sports centre looks promising with efficient resource and space allocation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both the current layout and the redevelopment, and your overview identifies the key change: the outdoor courts are incorporated into an expanded complex. You also correctly report the central pool and the positions of the gym, changing room, seating and reception, and mention the new leisure pool, sports hall, dance studios, shop and café. This gives the response a solid account of the main features. However, some details are less fully or precisely described: the eastern side also gains two dance studios and a café and changing room in the south-east, while the western side gains a sports shop and changing room. The statement that the eastern court becomes a sports hall and dance studio “along with its changing room” blurs these distinct locations. A more exact comparison would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs describing the present plan and proposed changes, with a concluding sentence. This makes the main progression easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “Overall,” “With the present layout,” and “The redevelopments include.” At times, however, cohesion is mechanical or the references are unclear. For example, “the outside court which was situated on the left side after merging” makes the sequence of changes difficult to picture, and “respectively” is used where it does not clarify a comparison. The final “To summarize” repeats the positive overview rather than adding useful information. Use clearer spatial transitions—such as “on the western side” and “in the south-east corner”—and organise the future features by location.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “layout,” “redevelopment,” “situated,” “converted,” and “designated.” These choices help communicate the main changes, and some less common expressions show an attempt to vary your wording. However, several collocations and word choices are imprecise: “developments are being included into” and “merging the outside courts with the main building” do not naturally describe the planned expansion, while “efficient resource and space allocation” is an unsupported evaluation rather than a precise description. There are also spelling errors, including “buidling” and “situatted.” Aim for accurate, conventional map language such as “the building will be extended to include the former courts,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning “which” and “such as,” and the overall meaning is generally clear. Some sentences are controlled, for example, “At the north of the pool, the gym is located.” However, errors in articles, agreement, tense and sentence construction remain. Examples include “an reception section” (article choice), “with changing room” (missing article), and “the new future plans … looks promising” (subject–verb agreement). The sentence beginning “As for the outside court situated on the east is being converted” is also structurally incomplete. Use consistent future forms for planned changes, check singular/plural agreement, and revise long sentences into complete, clearly linked clauses. Greater accuracy across these patterns would make the description more fluent.
