IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plans below demonstrate the blueprint of university's sport centre now, and how it will look after reconstruction.
At a cursory glance, the new centre is going to increase in size with some new additions to the vicinity. While leisure pool, dance studio, sports hall and sports shop are being planned to be added to the structure. Meanwhile, outdoor courts would be no longer the part of the center. Furtherrmore, the size of gym and reception would be extended, while multiple changing rooms would also be added to the university sports centre.
To commence with, the future plans tend to extended reception which is in the south of sports centre. Furthermore, to the south-west of reception new sports shop is being planned with a new changing room right next to it. On the contrary, towards south-east a new cafe is in the blueprint with another changing room beside it. In addition to that, outdoor courts are being planed to be replaced by leisure pool on west and sports hall on east. Next to sports hall, a large area for Gym and Dance studio is also allocated.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main overall change: the centre expands, outdoor courts disappear, and several facilities are added. You also compare the present and proposed layouts and mention useful locations, such as the shop and changing room in the south-west and the café and changing room in the south-east. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear. The reception is retained in its original position rather than extended, and the gym’s extension is not described accurately. The future plan has a leisure pool on the west and a sports hall on the east, but the dance studios are along the eastern wall, not simply next to the sports hall. To strengthen the overview, report the key retained facilities and describe the main additions more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable progression: an opening overview is followed by a paragraph describing proposed changes and their locations. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “On the contrary,” and “In addition to that” help signal relationships, and the south-west/south-east contrast gives the description some structure. However, the second paragraph moves between areas without a consistent route through the plan, and “On the contrary” does not express the intended spatial contrast. The overview also combines several points in a long sentence beginning “While,” which is not a complete sentence. Organise the details by moving systematically from west to east or from north to south, and use simpler, more precise transitions to make the progression clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a redevelopment, including “blueprint,” “vicinity,” “allocated,” and “replaced,” and the reader can generally understand the intended changes. There are also attempts at less common phrasing, but some choices are unnatural or imprecise: “increase in size with some new additions to the vicinity” is less direct than saying the building will expand and gain facilities, while “the part of the center” is awkward for describing the courts’ removal. Spelling slips such as “Furtherrmore” and “planed” also reduce accuracy. Prefer standard map-description collocations such as “the centre will be expanded,” “will be replaced by,” and “will be added.” This would make the vocabulary more precise and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including future constructions and location phrases, and the main message is usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain. “While leisure pool, dance studio, sports hall and sports shop are being planned to be added” is a dependent clause used as a sentence; it needs a main clause or should be joined to the preceding sentence. “The future plans tend to extended reception” has an incorrect verb pattern, and “university’s sport centre” needs more accurate article and noun forms. The sentence beginning “Next to sports hall” also needs an article, and “a large area for Gym and Dance studio” does not clearly express the intended layout. Practise complete sentence structures and check articles, verb forms, and singular/plural agreement.
