IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given layouts illustrate the present university sports centre and future redevelopment plans.

The present university sports centre contains two outdoor courts each on east and west side, a reception at the entrance, a 25 meter pool at the centre and a seating area on the east side of the pool, a changing room at the west side of the pool and a gym at the north side of the pool.

On the other hand, in redevelopment plan outdoor courts are removed and replaced with dance studios at east side and leisure pool. The reception, center 25 meters pool, seating and changing room are remained unchanged. The entrance area is extended. A cafe on south-east side of the entrance and a sports shop on the south-west side of the reception are added. The gym is extended towards the east side. There is an addition of sports hall between the dance studios and seating. Two extra changing rooms are added each on south-west and south-east side.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main change from outdoor courts to indoor facilities and accurately note that the central pool, seating, reception and existing changing room remain in place. You also report several additions, including the leisure pool, sports hall, café and sports shop. However, some important details are unclear or inaccurate: the eastern side has two dance studios, while the western side has the leisure pool; saying the courts are replaced with “dance studios at east side and leisure pool” does not clearly distinguish these locations. The gym extends eastward, but the plan also shows it occupying a longer stretch of the northern side. The overview would be stronger if it clearly summarised the centre’s expansion and the broad shift from outdoor to indoor facilities before listing details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response follows a sensible present-versus-future order, and the paragraph break helps distinguish the two plans. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand” and “The reception… remained unchanged” make the comparison easy to follow overall. However, the first paragraph is a long list of locations joined mainly by commas, so the relationships between features are not always easy to process. In the redevelopment paragraph, several short statements are presented in sequence, and “There is an addition” feels mechanical. Grouping the new facilities by west, centre and east would create clearer progression, while a concise overview sentence would help the reader see the main transformation before the details.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of relevant terms, including “redevelopment plans,” “replaced,” “extended,” and “added,” and the facility names are generally clear. Some wording is imprecise or repetitive, however. “Outdoor courts are removed and replaced with dance studios at east side and leisure pool” does not express the locations cleanly, and “entrance area is extended” is not a precise description of the plan. Repeated use of “side” and “added” also limits variety. More exact spatial language would improve precision, for example distinguishing the western leisure pool from the eastern dance studios and describing facilities as being “to the east of” or “in the south-west corner.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and some more developed structures, and the meaning is generally understandable. There are, however, some errors in verb forms, articles and sentence construction. In “The reception, center 25 meters pool, seating and changing room are remained unchanged,” the passive form is incorrect; use “remain unchanged.” The phrase “each on east and west side” needs articles and plural agreement, such as “on the east and west sides.” In “a changing room at the west side,” the article and preposition pattern should be “on the west side.” The long opening description also relies on comma-separated items rather than controlled sentence structure. Check agreement and article use, and vary sentence patterns to describe comparisons more accurately.
